Meet Dr. David I Alpan DDS MSD of Alpan Orthodontics in Westlake Village & Century City

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. David I Alpan DDS MSD.

Dr. David I, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I am third in my generation to practice in the field of dentistry. My grandfather, Henry Alpan DDS opened his first practice in Europe in the year 1919. My father, Jack Alpan DDS opened his first practice in Los Angeles in the year 1965. With the examples of my grandfather and father, I fell in love with the field of dentistry. I decided to specialize in orthodontics because I love the challenges and rewards of improving a persons’ smile along with their self-esteem. Every patient becomes a member of our growing family and finishes with a bigger, brighter and more confident smile.

I earned my Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree from the University of the Pacific (UOP) School of Dentistry in San Francisco, and became licensed to practice dentistry in California & Nevada in 1996. After completing the orthodontic training program at UOP in 1998, I received my Orthodontic Specialty Certificate. I was awarded a Master of Science in Dentistry (MSD) degree for my master’s thesis written on the results of the two-year TMJ research project I completed during my orthodontic specialty training.

In 1999 I founded Alpan Orthodontics and I have been an Orthodontist practicing in Los Angeles since then. Today I have two offices, one in Los Angeles, and another in Century City. I lecture for Propel, have written many articles on accelerated orthodontics for several publications, and enjoy speaking about accelerated orthodontics at seminars in the Los Angeles area and abroad.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The ability to watch my father and have him be a mentor made some of the more tricky times a bit easier. I have been fortunate enough to have had him to get advice and encouragement from. He knew exactly what I was going through a lot of the time.

I guess one of the challenges I have found along the way is wearing all of the hats successfully. Being an excellent orthodontist, while being a successful business owner, managing an excellent team. Making sure to encourage and inspire my team consistently, and keeping all of my patients happy can be a challenge at times, but all of it is important. I care about all of the details, and I take pride in having a successful practice.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Alpan Orthodontics – what should we know?

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My father, Jack Alpan DDS has contributed greatly to my decision to become an orthodontist. He has been instrumental in many ways to my success. My mother has also been tremendously supportive of Alpan Orthodontics, as my office manager for several years, and cheerleader.

My sister Wendy has been an asset to my team along with a few staff members that have been with me for several years. Really amazing.

I also appreciate my peers. There are many great dentists and orthodontists out there, and in meeting them at lunch & learns or at insiders meetings, seminars, etc., they have always inspired me. I feel passionate about being innovative, and doing my very best at all times to make my practice stand out.
