Today we’d like to introduce you to Derrick Russell.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Derrick. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I grew up in South Central LA to an incredible single black woman named Wanda Elaine. She taught me everything from hemming my pants to baking cakes.
Eight years ago I lost my mother, the women who taught me everything. It took me years to figure out how I would honor her memory.
I started off by doing my yearly Christmas party just like she did, In the same house all the way down to making sure every guest left with a gift. This gift was fresh baked bread pudding.
My guest enjoyed them so much that they started to call and request them. After about 20 dozens sold, I told my wife, maybe I should take this serious.
That’s exactly what I did. I took my mothers recipe and expanded it to 25 different flavors. Which we now have Elaine’s bread pudding, a business that is growing everyday…
Pleased to say, we have sold out at the La Bbq Fest and The Taste of Inglewood.. just to name a few.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I can honestly say it has been a smooth road even with the learning curve of starting a new business. I owe that to my incredible wife (Demetria) and a circle of friends like no other who help me like it’s their business.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Elaine’s is a bakery that specializes in Bread Pudding.
We are known for our Peach Cobbler Bread Pudding and our signature Pineapple Blueberry lemonade Bread Pudding.
The thing I am most proud of is that this company bares the name of the women who taught me how to love and to bake. My mother Elaine.
Whats sets of apart from everyone would be our 25 flavors and growing.
What were you like growing up?
I grew up fun loving and creative and I stayed in the spotlight singing my heart out in churches and on stages throughout la starting at five years old.
Music was my 1st love until I realized how much I loved being in the kitchen with my mom cause it allowed me to be creative in a different way but the outcome felt the same to me.
