Today we’d like to introduce you to Dennis Sanders.
Hi Dennis, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I discovered Iron Maiden at about 6 or 7 years old and my obsession with music grew from there. My parents were young and they did their own thing. My dad was a marine turned machinist and played drums and guitar in his spare time. Mom was a dancer and a hustler. They separated when I was a baby so I don’t remember much of them being together but they were both into music so that’s where I got it from. I learned how to play guitar at around 9 or 10 years old and I started my first band when I was 14. After playing in numerous bands throughout my teens and early twenties, in south Louisiana, I got a job as a guitar tech working for Wes Borland (limp bizkit). and soon I joined a band with him as a bass player. I then relocated to the Bay Area and started Spirit in the Room in early 2009 and then moved to Los Angeles in 2012 where I’ve continued to write and record under the name Spirit in the Room. I have a couple of other projects that I’m working on but my main focus is and has been Spirit in the Room.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It’s a city built on lies and nepotism amongst other atrocities. I’ve experienced periods of self-doubt. Financial struggles. Trust issues. Battles with substance abuse. Bad friends. Terrible advice. Shady Management and business practices in general. It’s all about who you know and how much money you have. Talent takes a backseat most of the time. But the weather is nice 🙂
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a singer, songwriter, performer and visual artist. I am most proud of my music. What sets me aside from others is that I do it myself. I don’t follow trends nor do I put myself in any sort of creative corner… I am confident and I don’t concern myself with what other people think. I don’t let the opinions of others deter me from my vision.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I have taken multiple risks. I gave up everything back home, moved out to California and built my own world. There are multiple risks within those individual actions alone.
I have continued to challenge people with my music. I am prepared to die when I perform and as a free thinker, I am at a constant risk, for it has become a crime in itself to be just that. A free thinker.
I have my own voice, my own language and my own code of conduct and I treat others the way I prefer to be treated.
