Today we’d like to introduce you to Dave Farrar.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Dave. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I have been a Police Officer for over 25 years and am looking to retire soon. I had always been active in the art field in some way either drawing sketches for my co-workers or becoming my police department’s first forensic sketch artist. While thinking about what I was going to do after police work I thought why not do something completely different, so I turned to one of my passions since childhood, comic books and comic book art.
I started small about a year ago doing small pieces and posting them on my social media accounts. As the interest grew I was offered a booth at a local street fair and to my surprise it was very well received. I decided to try my hand at the comic con circuit and attended my first one at the San Francisco Comic con in 2016. Again, it was a blast and I got to meet a large group of cool like-minded people.
I was then approached to exhibit in a local art gallery after an interview I was accepted as the first artist to display comic book art in the Delta Gallery for the visual and performing arts in Brentwood. I completed (4) successful showings there and was continued to attend various comic cons around California. I have also been keeping busy by doing private commissions for customers, and am currently showing at another gallery in Carson City Nevada, as well as having my work displayed in two Philz Coffee locations.
It has been a great ride and I was recently contacted to have a booth at Stan Lee’s L.A. Comic Con in October. I look forward to getting my art work out to the Southern California area.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
All in all, it has been a fantastic ride with a couple of bumps along the way. Some of the obstacles I have encountered were really small issues in the beginning, like finding the right materials to display my work, such as canvas vs metal etc. But all things considered, I have been very lucky.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Geek Fine Art – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I specialize in original interpretations of comic book and pop culture heroes. I draw, color and finish by hand. Each piece I create starts as a blank sheet of paper, I sketch out my piece in pencil, ink it, then color and finish it using alcohol based markers. I then make a limited run of 150 lithographs which are signed and numbered and offered to the public.
Some of the comic con attendees have commented that my work seems to come off the page because of the action poses I choose, and I think that kind of feedback makes me the proudest. In this digital age, I think the hand drawn aspect adds a little “character” to the “character” giving it a little bit of a different look setting it apart from a digitally drawn image.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
As far as the future goes, I am quite happy with the way this venture is unfolding, but I would love to branch out to more comic cons and galleries and maybe do some published work for any of the major companies.
It would also be great if the art work took me to comic cons in different countries someday.
