Meet Cordell Purnell of The Storm Family in Lancaster

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cordell Purnell.

So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started out in my early teens in Brooklyn, NY Bedstuy. I was fascinated by the underground dance party and battle scene. I learned the Brooklyn born dance style called “FlexN” shortly after learning the bruk up and dancehall styles. This gave me the foundation I needed to create within the style. I began doing shows and forming dance crews and entering and winning competitions. But that wasn’t enough for me I wanted more. To my surprise, I met the love of my life through dance. She was a dancer too. A choreographer. We actually battled when we met. I asked her to be my wife and we began to form a dance family. Things got a little rough being in the entertainment industry. I knew I needed to change some things in my life. So I gave my life to Christ and dedicated myself to learning his ways.

I began traveling the world preaching the gospel, mentoring the youth, teaching the Hebrew language, and dancing. Our family became a ministry. We got bigger and closer on a mission to heal the world. I now have twelve children and have been married twelve years and recently traveled across the country to expand the mission, the vision and our dreams. We moved to LA and began doing commercials, music videos, movies, and TV shows. Also performing at big dance events and churches sharing our gifts with the world. It has been tough at times, we even had to sleep in our vehicles. But the joy and fulfillment it brings make it all worth it. We’ve been in LA now for a little over one year and things are getting better. We are excited to continue this journey stronger than we started. With more love more faith and more lives changed through our dancing.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No the road has not been smooth. When we came out here, we were homeless and it was very difficult feeding and caring for myself and my 12 children. We didn’t have any friends or family on the west coast that could help a family so large. I had to sell our 12 passenger van we drove here for extra money to survive.

The Storm Family – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We are “The Storm Family” a performing arts family full of dancers, models, actors, and singers. But we are mostly known for dancing. What makes us most proud is we promote family, love, and unity. The unique thing about us is that we are one big family of 14 members a mother, father, and 12 children in business together.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Seeing my five years old in a big music video.
