Meet Cindy Shaoul

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cindy Shaoul.

Hi Cindy, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I grew up in a house filled with art and antiques. Growing up watching my grandfather and mother both painting, my mom in her studio, and my grandpa using the living room as his, it was a normal thing for me. Every day, there would be some excitement around art; I have memories of my mom painting our kitchen walls; literally all the kitchen walls, she filled up every last empty space with her beautiful landscapes and wilderness genres. I never thought I would be an artist, I loved observing everything, but deep down inside, I never thought I would be painting like my family members one day. It wasn’t until I was in my second year at college that I had a deep urge to take figure painting, I eventually transferred home and started on my journey as an artist.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
I’m not sure if it was exactly a smooth road, I definitely felt many challenges to begin painting. Just the idea of leaving college and pursuing my desire to learn painting was a big struggle because it didn’t exactly sit well with my father. Today, if you don’t finish college there are many preconceived notions that you won’t be successful in life. I wanted to stay and make my family happy so the only way in which I could take any form of art was to take a set design class. Half the semester was very technical and mathematical, I struggled with that immensely and felt like I was failing all the time. Then I was finally able to take the drawing and watercolor part of the class and that fueled me and felt right. After finishing that semester, I took the plunge to return home and knew in every part of myself that painting is all I wanted to do.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a lover of impressionism and abstraction, I focus on painting in oil and use mixed media, bridging these two loves in different series. I am known for my Heart’s collection, Dripping Dots, Brides, and quintessential New York City street scenes. I infuse impressionism while curating bright colors in my work and try to keep my collections versatile. My style also fuses old and new through adding a touch of haute couture.

I am most proud when people find inspiration in my work and it gives them the courage to pursue their own dreams. I believe that each person has their own journey, and in my case I have had the fortunate opportunity to pursue my dreams and make people happy through my art. For this, I feel very lucky to be able to share my journey and experience with the world.

What matters most to you? Why?
Connection with others, family, and the opportunity to paint. These are the most important elements in my life and give me true meaning.
