Meet Christy Buss of The Studio Art of Dance

Today we’d like to introduce you to Christy Buss.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Aside from holding a Los Angeles powerhouse last name with the Los Angeles Lakers, I established myself as a self-made dance professional. I attribute my love for dance to my mother who owned her own dance studio when women didn’t own businesses. I grew up dancing every day and learned everything I know through her amazing talent. It has made me who I am today.

Currently, I am directing a live dance show for the Las Vegas strip entitled “Floored!” It’s high energy and emotionally stirring new dance show with a cast of superbly talented female dancers who take the audience on tour through urban dance from its roots in African dance to Afro Cuban to Charleston, Swing, Shuffle, Tap, and Hip-Hop.

When I am not directing the upcoming show, I dedicate myself to my business The Studio Art of Dance. I love to help everyone be able to take a dance class. I have helped so many dancers who otherwise might not be able to financially afford to go to have that chance. In the big picture, it always comes back to you. I have had most of my dancers start at 3 and leave me at 18 to go to college! 27 years strong.

I also have many dancers I taught, now teaching for me and that inspires me to see them to be able to live their passion. Floored the show will be coming to a venue in Las Vegas in 2019. Live your dreams!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
If there isn’t a struggle, then it doesn’t reap the rewards as much. Of course, small business is not an easy venture, and small business as a woman is even harder.

Ups and downs w/ floored having a venue then getting it pulled to dancers who may have been here had to leave from their expiring visas. So many typical struggles but that’s the inspiration!

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success comes from defeat! Never allowing NO to stand in your way. Seeing my show at the initial opening Night! TV and documenting it will be a bonus success.
