Today we’d like to introduce you to Chiara Ferrari.
Chiara, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Born and raised in Italy in a family of artists. After graduating in Industrial design at Milan Politecnico in 2003, worked in Italy for a few years and moved to London in 2006. I have built my experience working for practices in Milan and London, including Zaha Hadid Architects, Lissoni Associati, Thomas Heatherwick, Future Systems/Amanda Levete and Ross Lovegrove.
In 2010 I started my own practice in London, undertaking Interiors and custom furniture projects on a global scale. Los Angeles has been a new chapter for the past three years.
Living and working out here has allowed the studio to expand to a more interdisciplinary approach. L.A. a blank canvas to paint.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Not at all a smooth road, not even riding my bikes. Relocating in Los Angeles was like starting all over again.
Different place, different culture and design dynamics – so finding a way through was – and still is – a challenge. What worked in London does not necessarily work in LA.
While Europe is very design-community oriented, LA is so big and spread out, with no real design hub. But somehow, you have ‘ space’ to just be.
Chiara Ferrari Studio – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Custom furniture and lighting are still a big part of the business – we work with local and international clients while keeping the production in LA – but we had opportunities to collaborate with artists and brands on different levels, from exhibition design to content curation and styling.
Also, we often collaborate with local architectural practices and developers, providing hi-end Interior design Concepts, ranging from residential to retail and commercial projects.
Since 2016 I have been teaching at Art Center College of Design, which added a lot of meaning to the LA chapter. It’s a very dynamic creative environment, rich of talents, and I enjoy sharing my passions and knowledge with younger colleagues. It’s a dialogue.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
People define success. Empathy plays a big role in designing, so how people experience design is key to a successful project. Could be about comfort, or aesthetic… But being timeless is key.
