Today we’d like to introduce you to Chenelle Campbell.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’ve always been the “creative” in a family of scholars. That may have served as the challenging part of figuring out my career, I realize now that is was my superpower. Growing up in a Jamaican family, education was everything. My plan for myself was to go to school and then be a doctor or a lawyer. I attended undergrad for a B.A. in Psychology, and after working in Marketing for a few years, I decided to enroll in a Master’s program for an MBA in Marketing.
I have always found myself helping the ones around me to establish their brand, create things, or help them market their brand to their different audiences. In helping friends with their businesses, I quickly learned what I enjoyed doing – marketing. Although some may glaze over at the general discussion of analytics or brand strategy, It’s also a driving force to creating the voice and style of a company.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The path to finding my career was originally a winding road for me. My Bachelor’s Degree in psychology was a journey that originally started with myself choosing my first two years as a business major. Undergrad was where I had learned that there was no real black and white method to finding your career fit, but a gray area that I would learn later would help me to figure out what I wanted to do career-wise.
After my time in undergrad, I landed my first Marketing position for an aviation company. To be honest, I had no idea what marketing had entirely consisted of, but I thought I would give it a chance. It was then that everything came together for me. I quickly realized that the commercials on television, the ads in magazines, and even the front-facing items belonging to the smaller companies I had worked for in the past, had a team of people curating content that would catch the attention of their consumer (also solidifying that my obsession with clever ads on tv and in magazines was not in vain!).
The struggles in the process of becoming a brand architect mostly came from my hesitance to actually sell my talent. When I had started freelancing, there was a hesitation I felt in offering my services, and this was mostly because I never knew if I would feel ready for whatever projects were needed. Through taking the plunge and saying yes, I learned a lot about myself and my capabilities. I had to challenge myself to align with those I wanted to help, and that would start by getting out of my head. I help people starting a business, who also have the same fear and are looking for someone to get them out of their heads at times as well.
Please tell us about Chenelle Ray.
The main focus of my service is geared toward small to medium-sized businesses in Los Angeles. I have assisted all industries in brand execution, from law offices to podcasts. In being a social brand architect, I take a systematic approach by finding ways to understand what audience the business owner wants to attract, and then create strategies to meet the needs of my clients.
My business offers photography, logo design, copywriting, social media management, event management, and analytics. I am mostly known for my assistance with content creation and photography. What sets me apart from other businesses, and what I am most proud of is my ability to individualize each strategy, and service package to the needs of the brand. I enjoy the opportunity to research a new industry, and also do my best to plug into that industry’s community to see how to best approach content creation.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Hm… My favorite childhood memory has to be riding bicycles around as a kid. My friends and I would take our bikes on a dirt trail behind a mortuary and straight to KFC or go on a search for spiders and other bugs we could find on that dirt road (… life in a small town). I was by no means a nature kid growing up, and I am pretty sure I created my own fear of spiders! Those bike trips were strangely worth it.
