Meet Carolyn Winslow of Portus Imaging in Silverlake

Today we’d like to introduce you to Carolyn Winslow.

Carolyn was born in a suburb of Detroit, Michigan. In 1995, she graduated from Rochester Institute of Technology with a BFA in advertising photography. After graduating she moved to Los Angeles and worked as an assistant with a handful of photographers, and gradually moved into becoming a retoucher.

In 2005, she founded Portus Imaging, a Los Angeles based retouching boutique that works on projects ranging from worldwide advertising campaigns to editorial assignments. Currently, she resides in Los Feliz, California with her family.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
When you own a small business you need to do a little bit of everything, even if it isn’t your strong suit. The challenge is finding people for your team to make up for your deficiencies.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Portus Imaging – what should we know?
We are a retouching house. We specialize in compositing and color. We are fortunate to have a broad range of clients such as, Nike, Gatorade, Lexus, Samsung, Coca-Cola, Levis, Apple, Target to name a few. I am proud that my team is able to turn out quality work under tight deadlines. I feel my high standards, experience and aesthetic have helped my studio achieve a level of notoriety in my industry.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
Marisa Montellano has been my studio manager for almost 10 years. She is responsible for making the studio run smoothly. Mae Dean has been with me about 2 years. She is the liaison between client and retoucher. They both help me with quality control.

Sandy Ryan is my bookkeeper who helps me with everything financial

I also have a wonderful team of freelance retouchers that always have my back.
