Today we’d like to introduce you to Cameron Jordan.
Cameron, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Chasing light has always been my passion. As a kid, I became fascinated with the magic of photography–capturing a single moment on film, something you can see for a second and then remember forever with the click of a button. There is so much depth of emotion, subtext and story that can exist in that single unscripted moment. The intangible magic, and the spontaneity of those perfect accidents, inspire and drive me.
I studied sculpture and photography at the University of Texas at Austin, where I became immersed in the Austin art and music scene. I started photographing bands, painting for art galleries, and worked with an art movement called “Burn the Box,” where I met some of the artists that changed my life forever. I worked locally for a few years, but eventually I put on my red cowboy boots and followed my heart (and a drummer) to Los Angeles. I was traveling all over the world, photographing bands. I loved the raw energy of the performers, the gypsy lifestyle and fleeting impermanence.
Now, we have two amazing kids. These days you will likely find me doing photo shoots with one of them strapped to my body.
I create lifestyle work for companies, specializing in fashion and eco-friendly associations and brands. I’ve had the incredible opportunity to shoot for Vogue, Rolling Stone, Conde Nast and many others.
I have also been experimenting with a mixed media blending of photography and my abstract, etherial painting style. I am planning for a show in the fall.
The journey as an artist, photographer, mother and wife has shaped the landscape of my life vastly and I aim to use my passion to help make the world a better place while inspiring my two budding artists to also make the world a little more beautiful with their hearts and their art.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
A smooth road for an artist?! NEVER! I feel like we are always our own worst critics. I think my biggest struggle has always been within myself and being ready to release work into the world. On a practical level, an artist doesn’t have a 9 to 5 job and the creative motor is hard to turn off. Especially being a mother! My days are split up and as soon as the kids go to bed, round two of the workday starts. There are endless nights of little sleep because I may stay up late editing or painting, and then the kids will wake up at sunrise (or before)! It’s the truly magical people that have filled my life and inspired me that have kept me going. My husband is a musician, so we constantly have amazing new music filling our home. Our kids are so energetic and find so much wonder in the world, that I cannot help but be filled with that beauty too, even when I’m facing personal creative blocks.
Please tell us about Cameron Jordan Photography.
Cameron Jordan Photography is known for playful and ethereal images that are simultaneously raw and dreamlike. I am really dedicated to making positive changes in the world through my craft, so I choose projects and collaborations with companies that share that vision. I do editorial and lifestyle imagery for socially conscious and ethically made fashion brands. I also shoot a lot of musicians. I strive for visually dynamic and stimulating images that are driven by emotive moments. I love shooting in a photojournalistic style because it allows me to capture the magic and truth in real emotions and situations rather than formulate the experience. Life is so beautiful and surreal. I love showing the magic that happens in real life.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I have so many amazing memories from my childhood. I was really lucky to grow up with a very loving family and have a large extended family that was extremely active in my life. Raising my own kids, I’m reminded so much of how truly blessed I was to have a happy upbringing. Although my parents did not necessarily have amazing musical skills, we always had music in our lives. My father’s infamous whistle could be heard from around the block. My mom loved Fleetwood Mac and we would turn up the tunes in the car and just let it rip. There was always singing, laughter, and a very playful energy in our family. This has carried into my home life now with my own children and even in the way I work. I think that’s actually a gift – to truly know how to have a light heart and play.
