Today we’d like to introduce you to Cambreisha Montgomery.
So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I decided to create Glow Girls as a safe space for teenage girls after working with victims of sex trafficking who were locked up in Juvenile Hall. I knew that I needed to develop a preventative method for young women who were entering puberty and curious about sex. I wanted to create a movement for young girls to feel safe about their feelings, their bodies, and healthy relationships. I put a lot of thought into what would be the best way for these girls to retain important and necessary information that could change their lives. Teenage years can be hard because people expect you not to act like a child because you’re too old but they expect you not to act like an adult because you’re not old enough. I created Glow Girls to help them navigate this section of life so they can go into womanhood with the necessary tools to be confident and secure! There is a difference between instructing teens on how to do something and educating them on what to expect. I’m here to educate young women on the challenges and curiosities of life. I don’t suggest anything, I simply inform teens on all aspects whether good and bad, so they can make the best decision for them.
Has it been a smooth road?
The hardest part was that we launched during COVID. We are an interactive company and it was limited in what we could do in person and we had to rely on the virtual world to get our messages out there. We had some partnerships fall through due to budget cuts and some scheduled events that had been canceled. Growing our social media has also proven to be challenging so we made sure to have a very bright, eye-catching page to attract our target demographic.
Please tell us about Glow Girls.
Glow Girls is dedicated to educating teenage girls about relationships, love, and sex through e-books, videos, and discussion groups. We focus on three areas: Sex Education, Healthy Relationships, and Self-Love.
Sexual Education: Preventative methods are a primary focus as well as what sex should and shouldn’t be. We teach about STDs, contraceptives, and consensual sex.
Healthy Relationships: Focuses on the Relationship Attachment Model by teaching the five steps to a healthy and fulfilling relationship.
Self-Love: Learning how to love yourself is the first step in learning how to love others. We teach young women the importance of self-love and setting boundaries with their hearts, love, and bodies.
I am very proud of how innovative we are in our approach when it comes to touchy subjects. The e-books allow our participants to remember and reflect on concepts that can be applied to their daily lives. Glow Girls is different because we aren’t afraid to talk about taboo topics in-depth and allow girls to express their curiosity without feeling weird or judged. We also make our materials available to parents so they can reinforce these concepts at home. We have created a safe, no-judgment space for teenage girls to be able to get an education in a way that is relatable to where they are in their journey, so they can make the best decisions possible.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I believe that the adolescent sexual health and reproductive industry will become trendy because teens have so much access to information that they just aren’t mature enough to process. So I believe that minors will have more sexual reproductive rights that allow them to make some important decisions about their bodies. I am also hoping to see the sexual education curriculum evolve in a way that also educates parents on how to have these uncomfortable but necessary conversations. I want to be a part of the sexual education curriculum push to introduce early concepts of sexual education in elementary schools, such as inappropriate areas to touch and their body parts.
