Meet Brenna McGowan

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brenna McGowan.

Brenna, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Back in 2011, I started to work as an independent contractor helping companies with their blogs and social media posts. I also worked my way into copy editing publications and assisting with email marketing.

In 2018 one of the companies I was working for had slowed down and pulled back on my hours, and at the same time one of my best friends started a business. Also, a couple of other things happened during this period: 1. I was about to turn 40 and was ready for a change in my life, especially since my kids were older and more independent 2. I did Whole30. I know it sounds strange, but something about sticking to an eating plan and losing the weight that I’d wanted to lose for years gave me a boost of confidence. That boost was exactly what I needed to believe in myself and abilities. So, when my friend started her business, I offered to help her with her online marketing. Through helping her, I started to get people interested in my services. At that point, I decided to start my own company doing social media marketing/management.

Over the first year in business, I discovered that I loved helping people with strategy and copywriting, primarily email copy, but I didn’t love the day-to-day managing of social media accounts.

So at the beginning of 2019, I pivoted to focus on email & Instagram copywriting. Then, in the spring of 2019, I had an online friend approach me about running a membership with her. We created The Content Bar, which is a monthly membership that helps female entrepreneurs—especially those who are bloggers, creatives and personal brands—take the guesswork out of social media and Instagram marketing so they spend less time creating posts and more time gaining new clients.

Has it been a smooth road?
No, I don’t think it’s been a smooth road, haha.

There are so many moving parts to running your own business, especially when you’re a solopreneur. From creating a website to working on your own marketing, gaining clients, retaining clients, bookkeeping—the work can seem never ending.

That is one of the reasons we created The Content Bar. My business partner and I wanted to remove some of the overwhelm for our members when it came time to market their business.

I also found one of my struggles when I began was thinking I had to be everything and know everything. Once I decided to niche down and focus on email and Instagram copy, my business began to gain momentum because I clearly defined who I was and how I could help others.

Lastly, one of the struggles I’ve had is my own limiting beliefs, comparison and mindset. I wish I could say that I’ve conquered all three, but have definitely made lots of progress. The one area that has made the difference is realizing that if I’m myself, I will attract the right clients and customers. This concept has been very freeing for me in my business.

Alright – so let’s talk business. What else should we know about you and your career so far?
At this time, I run my own business as an email copywriter and am the co-creator of a membership, The Content Bar.

Since I help private clients with their email and Instagram copy, I am able to take these skills and help other women improve their copy—which is essential to every business—at an affordable price. When I first started my business, I did not have a lot of money to invest in copywriting, branded images, etc. The fact we give female-owned businesses a beautiful brand at their fingertips is something I’m most proud of.

What sets The Content Bar apart from others is the fact that it is run by a professional photographer and copywriter. In order for any online marketing strategy to work, you have to have a combination of good copy and beautiful imagery. Our membership is full of stock photos so you don’t have to scour the internet looking for a good picture, and we have prompts and templates for captions and emails so you’re never at a loss of what to post or write again. We also have monthly trainings to enhance your own copywriting and photo-taking skills, not to mention content calendar with planning ideas, hashtags so you attract your audience and more. It’s is your ultimate brand-in-a=box. One of the biggest benefits of being a member is that you have access to feedback on your copy and images on both your copy or image questions.

For my private work, I help coaches, creatives and lifestyle entrepreneurs use everyday stories to connect with their audience so they get more engagement, replies and conversions. I am known for helping clients use their unique personality and stories that connect, fun and are easy to write.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love LA and Orange County. At heart, I’m a beach girl and love Newport Beach and Zuma. I also love shopping in Santa Monica at the Promenade and heading down to the pier.

What I don’t love about LA is the traffic, but I think everyone says that!
