Meet Lan Belinky of Boscia in Irvine

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lan Belinky.

Lan, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My passion for beauty was something I always knew I had from the beginning. Being born and raised in Japan, I was taught from a very young age that taking care of your skin was a must. I would be fascinated watching my grandmother and my aunt meticulously apply their skincare and beauty routines—everything was done with the utmost care. Later in my teen years, my father moved my family from Japan to the U.S. for us to bring the art of Japanese skincare stateside. After a few years, boscia was born. I officially joined the team after graduating university and started out processing orders, packing boxes, and handing out samples; you name it I did it. I truly do believe that the Japanese botanical science foundation of our products is what makes them effective and we’ve been able to expand our customer and retailer base as a result.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
When boscia first came into the market, it definitely took a lot of hard work to get our foot through the door. We knew the power and potential boscia had, we just had to educate a world that was new to us on it. We would go to fairs, local malls, and shows to hand out samples. Our house was pretty much the boscia headquarters at one point, one of our rooms was dedicated to shipping and processing orders—I couldn’t really understand why I couldn’t have my own room back then, but I completely understand now.

When we would present boscia as a chemical preservative-free skincare brand, some consumers didn’t understand what that meant and didn’t seem to see the value in a skincare brand that was the first of its kind and extremely clean, it took educating and showing retailer partners that our products are actually highly effective and clean.

Please tell us about Boscia.
At boscia, we use ingredients rooted in nature—plant-to-bottle formulas that show results with fun formulas. We specialize in chemically preservative-free skincare; instead of using harsh chemical preservatives, we use natural ingredients that have major skincare benefits but also act as clean conservers. I believe what sets us apart is our innovative technological approach to botanical skincare and combining it with our Japanese heritage to make a truly unique experience for the client. What I’m most proud of as a company is our growth. In 2018, we were able to expand not only domestically but internationally as well. We can be found all across Europe, Middle East, Southeast Asia, and Britain and we plan to grow even more in the upcoming years!

Where do you see your industry going over the next 5-10 years?
I see skincare growing more than ever before. Our consumers are becoming more ingredient-conscious and are looking for the most clean and effective formulas. I expect a big trend will be cryotherapy-inspired skincare or plant-based alternatives to ingredients such as retinols and collagen.
