Today we’d like to introduce you to Belle Tuckerman.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Belle. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I grew up in a small coal mining town in Eastern PA. It was the depression and I had one doll and a pair of skates. Times were tough. But during those years I learned that I had the gift of creativity. I invented toys and games and I made art from anything I found in our home. That was the start of my artistic journey.
People fascinate me. I choose to sculpt exotic and unique souls because of their colorful histories; they provoke me in a way than I cannot explain.
As a child of the depression era, I had little to be creative with. But I loved to invent so I made my own dreamed up art from anything I could find around our home. That was the start of my art education.
My 35 year career as a nationally certified massage therapist and licensed esthetician opened my heart and mind to the living spirit and taught my hands the intricacies of face and body. With that unique education I was blessed with a love for sculpting.
I have apprenticed with several successful artists privately over the years. From these teachers, and me from years of study at the Scottsdale Artists’ School, Scottsdale AZ, I learned the art of shadowing and infusing life into my works. I have received public and private commissions and shown in major and local juried art shows and galleries in California and New York.
I approach the art of sculpting like seeing through the lens of a camera. In each sculpture I create I express my personal truth in the powerful faces that emerge when I’m intently working the clay. My intention is to show the world who I am and what I believe. my desire is to create art that can coax viewers to look deeper into life and see the truth of what is there.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has been difficult to achieve success in my art. It takes many years to become known as an accomplished artist, and most never achieve that even though they have incredible talent. After many years of trying to break into the art world, I was accepted into a gallery, and some major art shows. People loved my art and from that time I was on my way.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Belle fine art sculpture – what should we know?
I sculpt in clay and have my pieces cast in bronze. I have done very small works and life size pieces as well. I have a broad range of styles from abstract to representational to animals and busts and full body sculptures.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
Friends have referred me to art shows and galleries and have sent clients who were looking to buy sculpture. I also was fortunate to have had many very successful artists with whom I mentored and studied. Their lessons have been invaluable to me.
It is difficult to sell sculpture. When someone buys art for their home they may buy 10 paintings before they buy just one sculpture. For myself, I prefer 3 dimensional art and I have sculpture all over my own home. I absolutely love it.
