Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley Edes.
Ashley, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started my career in the fashion industry, launching the social channels for New York Fashion Week. I decided to leave New York and move to LA, focusing my energy on supporting people and the causes I believe in. This eventually led to me launching FATA (fāta) – a creative production partner for women-identified and gender-expansive artists and filmmakers. Together, we co-create and perpetuate conscious culture through art, myth, and media.
I am also a visual artist and am currently creating an Oracle deck of my analog collages called Divine Rebel.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Making a leap out of the corporate world to work for myself made me a bit nervous. However, I was able to apply the skills and relationships that I cultivated to help support that transition. I have learned to balance my art and design practice, jumping back and forth when there’s a cyclical dip in either. And to prioritize time to rest and vision, creating long-term values-aligned goals which provide direction and creative fuel.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I offset my time on a computer with an analog collage practice. This is a combination of my love of counterculture and vintage publications, collecting and anthropology.
I see myself as a visual ensemblist – an artist-curator-archivist driven to “re-myth” media – amplifying the creative potential in all of us. Weaving feminism, the erotic and earth-based spirituality, my collages are rebellious mashups of the Divine. My practice is rooted in the belief that symbols have the power to define and perpetuate a culture’s value system. Cutting up vintage media is an attempt to expand what is known, to reshape inner and outer worlds.
