Today we’d like to introduce you to Anousha Hutton.
Anousha, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I got my start in photography at school, I was taught darkroom photography by a Zen Buddhist, his entire approach to photography was spiritual.
From my early education with him, I approached using the camera as a tool to develop more as a psychic, I went onto the University of the Arts Camberwell and studied Photography and Film. Art school was a bit hit or miss for me, my work was regularly contested by the tutors supposedly because my style of shooting was too provocative, although ironically that’s now become what my work seems to be most complimented on.
I don’t see the point in art unless you are welcoming someone into your world fully, I like to feel that I am pushing the viewer out of their comfort zone, dialing down intensity creatively so people felt comfortable didn’t make sense to me. My style didn’t become so brightly colored until I moved to Los Angeles, before then I was much more into Black and white and medium format print work, then everything became color saturated when I moved to LA.
I would always develop stories and characters from my dreams or psychic visions and then find actors who I felt could emulate that energy or scene well, I approach photography like directing a film in one fleeting moment, so most of my actors always receive character bios with the intention of music to listen to before coming to set, everything to me when creating is energetic.
Has it been a smooth road?
Like the majority of creatives, it hasn’t been a smooth road, although the bumps along the way have contributed to me becoming more aware of who I am as an artist and how my style resonates. At one time, due to lack of equipment I developed a signature lighting style using Home Depot flashlights, this is how my methodology behind the shooting was developed. In every hardship, I’ve learnt there is usually a life-changing blessing and lesson. I wouldn’t be able to create authentically without the hiccups. In adversity, we learn so much about who we are and what we want to say as artists.
We’d love to hear more about what you do.
I am a trance medium and photographer, blending the two disciplines together is what has developed my signature high contrast, surrealist style.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Everybody in this city has a story that’ll be fascinating to hear, there is never a moment of dullness in LA, for any artist here the importance is balance, accessing reality and fantasy, finding the balance between both states is key to longevity in this town.
