Today we’d like to introduce you to Anna Slevin.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started sewing when I was very young, and I got my first sewing machine at age 6. I sewed a pair of tiny pants for my favorite doll. I was always fascinated by making things and in intricate details. I would constantly be studying things to try to figure out how I could make them myself. As I got older, I started to develop more of a personal style. I loved art class and drawing; fashion was a very natural interest of mine and something that I have always wanted to do. I really started to make clothes in high school and into college, where I was able to formally learn construction and pattern making techniques. After working both in and out of the industry, I launched my eponymous label in 2014, and it has been truly such a blessing to be able to do.
Has it been a smooth road?
Of course starting a business inherently comes with its own set of challenges. I think a struggle that immediately comes to mind is around gaining exposure as a newer line, having more limited time and resources than the already established brands. There are tons of amazingly talented designers and a lot of ways to go about getting noticed. Figuring out which avenues work best for your particular business is a lot of trial and error.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Anna Slevin Collection (ASc) story. Tell us more about the business.
ASc is a contemporary womenswear clothing line with an artful interpretation of modern silhouettes. ASc’s smart aesthetic incorporates Anna’s love of art and architecture, melding elevated style and technique with street style cool. The Hooded Cape has been a customer favorite since our inception, and we still love creating it. The piece itself is very versatile and comfortable, and it works well on really all body types. ASc is woman-owned and operated, and it is made in the USA.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Fashion, like many, is an ever-changing industry. Even in the last few years, shopping has changed so dramatically with the increasing presence of social media and smart phones in our lives. I do still think there is a real need for brick and mortar shops. They are at the heart of the retail space, and they are very much a necessary avenue for real sales. However, with advances in technology, and the growing demand for a more competitive e-commerce space, we will see some cool tech-based changes to make on-the-go shopping easier than ever.
