Today we’d like to introduce you to Anna Krylova.
Anna, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I have always marched to the beat of my own drum. I began my career in advertising and early on realized that my passions would be best served in a more creative, forward facing industry. So, I switched gears to the boundless world of curve modeling and music, two industries that are leading trends and driving real change in people’s lives.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Hailing from Russia and after a stint in NYC, I now live in LA and it’s been an interesting but beautiful journey. I left my job in advertising, bought one-way ticket and moved with a carry-on bag to a different country when I was 21. Staying true to myself has definitely been a big one for me & it’s something I look forward to every single day. With each job, whether I’m DJing for a brand or working with a client on set, I always aim to spread positivity. Being constantly inspired by those before me & around me, I understand that my goal is to never forget where I’ve come from and to keep pushing to bring empowerment to people to live life to its fullest.
Please tell us about your work.
I’m a model and DJ so my business is my brand. I am signed to Natural Models in Los Angeles and I also have representation In Europe. I have been fortunate to work in different areas of the fashion industry including editorial, catalogue, commercial & TV and I’ve shot with many amazing brands like Good American, Reebok, Forever 21, Sephora, Athleta and etc. I love my agents! They work really hard. Together, we strive to continue to expand the definition of beauty on daily basis. It is a team effort and I salute everyone who has made an impact to spread the message of inclusion and diversity in the workplace. Becoming a DJ was *all a dream* (Biggie’s voice!!) and I took my time with it. Influenced by Russian culture and its classical music, I studied piano at age six and have developed a deep love for different genres. Learning the skills of turntables on my own, I got my other foot in the door with DJ-ing and I’ve spun for Barbie, Topshop, Bretman Rock, Urban Outfitters, Dash Radio to name a few. Music is truly a global language and it unites people; it’s the outlet that helps me express myself & serve a purpose. When I see people dance to my sets & have a good time, I feel complete. With all that said, I also use my social media to share the behind the scenes of it all. Since COVID, I have been doing DJ sets on my IG live – tune in every Saturday at 1pm PST/4pm EST. We get down!
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I have experienced one of the most endearing moments very recently. I am originally from a small town in the Far East of Russia and my family still lives there. My mama called me and said that her coworker has learned about me via Instagram and was inspired by my journey. She then started to feel good about herself, to like her body and she now wants to do things that’s always been put on hold. I personally know what a big deal & game changer it is to feel your best and to embrace yourself. The plus size portrayal in mass media back home still has a long way to go. Many women have ongoing struggles with their own self-acceptance and having a healthy body image is important. I have been able to build a community where we celebrate womanhood and body confidence. Self-love is a never-ending adventure. It’s moments like this that make me feel that I’m doing something right with my life.
