Meet Ann Sloan of The Carlötta Beautox Chronicles in Burbank

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ann Sloan.

Ann, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Last year, I left a job at ABC Television to pursue a passion project by becoming a podcast sitcom creator. My show is called The Carlötta Beautox Chronicles, a satirical look at a wanna-be actress and influencer who is determined to become Hollywood’s next big thing.

Fiction podcasts, or audio dramas, are one of the fasting growing sectors of the podcasting industry. In a landscape dominated by science-fiction, fantasy, and horror stories, I set out to break from the pack and create an over-the-top comedy set in the real world (if you can call Hollywood ‘the real world’ that is!)

I call the show the “67% true adventures of a 100% fake influencer” with tongue firmly planted in cheek. We are currently mid-season with a total of 8 episode produced. A 2nd season is already in the works.

As an entertainment marketer at a number of television networks, I always promoted and marketed the shows of other creatives in Los Angeles. I wanted for once to focus 100% on my own creative endeavors. I began by writing screenplays and was chosen for a Black List fellowship in 2017 on my very first screenplay.

Somewhere along the way, the audio drama industry came on my radar and it instantly captivated me: the ability to tell a story and create a world using only audio. Not only was it an intriguing challenge creatively, but it also proved to be do-able financially. Unlike films which require big budgets, audio drama can be produced inexpensively, and so I found my niche. Within four months, I was able to turn my idea into a tangible entertainment property available, for free, to everyone.

The show is written, directed, produced, and edited by me and co-produced by Laura Lipson.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The show has been a sheer delight and a huge amount of fun for me to do. I’ve found brilliant and hilarious actors here in LA and we have a blast working together. The challenge with this particular podcast has been getting it noticed in the ever-crowded fiction podcast world. As I mentioned in my previous answer, the fiction podcast landscape is dominated by science fiction, horror, and fantasy genres. There aren’t many (if any) audio dramas that focus on pop and celebrity culture. I feel like the audience that will find this show appealing, has not yet discovered the world of fiction podcasts. I consider it my job to change that.

Please tell us about The Carlötta Beautox Chronicles.
The Carlötta Beautox Chronicles is the first podcast production to come out of Trojan Cat Media, a company I own with my husband, Eric Harlacher. The pilot script for the show was chosen as a 2nd round finalist at the Austin Film Festival in 2018. It is the first of what I hope will be many fiction podcast productions currently being developed by our company.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
If one is to follow the path less taken, as I feel I have done, the most important characteristic is tenacity. I have a stick-to-it resolve that will get ultimately get this show noticed and listened to. The willingness to risk and be vulnerable are also qualities I value.

These episodes are genuinely LOL funny. And I hate the over-use of LOL. Each episode has lots of inside jokes about show business in LA, but the knowledge of the inside stuff is not needed to enjoy them. Ann has managed the difficult balance of making Carlotta vain, silly and not terribly smart but still immensely likeable. You _want_ her to succeed.

    It’s just brilliant.
