Meet Ann Shen

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ann Shen.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I didn’t start making art seriously until my mid-twenties. I had a whole different degree and career when I decided that I wanted to pursue something I was truly passionate about – and took the leap to go back to art school. After school, I started working full-time in graphic design jobs while also moonlighting as a freelance illustrator and making personal artwork until that became my full-time business.

Please tell us about your art.
I make illustrations, books, gift products, as well as work with companies on artwork for their products and publications. My art is about making beautiful things that bring joy to people and make them feel less alone.

Choosing a creative or artistic path comes with many financial challenges. Any advice for those struggling to focus on their artwork due to financial concerns?
Do what you need to do to get where you need to go. That may mean having a day job for awhile, that may mean always having a part-time gig outside of your artwork. Find out what you really want to go with your creative path – do you want it to be your business? Or do you just want to do it for personal fulfillment?

It can be both but know that if you want it to be your full-time job, then you have to get comfortable with all the business work that goes along with it. And get really good at saving money! A good nest egg gives you great freedom and security.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
I’ve published two books with Chronicle Books, “Bad Girls Throughout History” and “Legendary Ladies”, which may be found at your favorite bookstores, online, and in shops like Urban Outfitters, World Market, and Staples. I also collaborate with Disney’s Wonderground Gallery, and my Disney licensed artwork is shown and sold exclusively through their Downtown Disney location.

Otherwise, I also make work for clients that you may see on greeting cards by Papyrus, “Today is Going to Be A Great Day” day calendar, and the list goes on! I also have a shop online for personal artwork that I sell as art prints, enamel pins, postcards, and so on. You can find it at shop.ann-shen.com.
