Today we’d like to introduce you to Amber Melvisha.
So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Growing up, I lived in a creative household. My mom and I always did arts and crafts together like making jewelry, doing our nails and putting rhinestones on everything. I’ve always loved fashion, so when I was little I always played dress. I made my first garment at the age of 11. It was a skirt that I made from an old pair of jeans and at the time I didn’t know how to sew, so I glued the seams together. I went on to study Fashion Design at FIDM and from there, I created a line called Jessica Simone named after my mother who is my muse. I used to design for friends and family and also have collaborated with a few celebrities. Today I stand strong in using my gift of being a creator and stylist to raise money for my nonprofit, We Are Immune.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, my journey has not been easy. Early in my career, I’ve faced failure several times trying to break into the fashion industry. I was also diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis at age 26, which made it even more difficult for me to pursue my dreams. I’ve suffered not being able to walk or even use my hands. During these times, it was really tough to see my purpose and believe in myself. My diagnosis made me realize that nothing is promised. Health. Beauty. All these things fade in time. What I’ve been through helped me to understand that I shouldn’t waste my gift, and continues to drive me today.
We’d love to hear more about your organization.
I am the President of a nonprofit organization called We Are Immune. We aim to spread awareness, knowledge, support and love to anyone dealing with an autoimmune disease. We pride ourselves on being hands-on, playing a direct role in the lives of the people we serve. As a creative individual, I use the clothing and jewelry I make as a means to raise money for the nonprofit. We Are Immune is a unique way for me to give back to my community, improving the quality of life of those dealing with similar conditions as I am, while also providing a creative outlet for myself. I feel so blessed that I am able to touch people’s lives in a positive way by doing what I’m most passionate about.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I believe resilience is an important quality to have for success. Life is going to throw a lot at you. Staying positive, having faith and being able to face what comes your way, getting back up when you’re knocked down, is how you win in this life. BALANCE, as well. For those like myself, still working a regular job and trying to find time and energy to give to your creative passions and dreams, it’s important to find balance between the two.
