Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexis Schomer.
Alexis, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started my entrepreneurial journey in college when I thought of an app to help create recipes from leftover ingredients. I took an entrepreneurship class and learned about the fundamentals of validating an idea and developing a business model.
What really launched my career in this industry was participating in and winning a startup weekend. Based on an idea I had from being a competitive cheerleader, my team and I presented a healthcare solution and won $10,000 for the idea. Since then, I have been working as an entrepreneur in multiple businesses and what I like to call “Side Hustles.”
Currently, I am working on a startup called Expy Health, a digital health company helping patients prepare for and recover from orthopedic surgery. We are in the middle of raising our first round of seed funding and securing pilots with a few local healthcare organizations. In addition, I founded a digital marketing agency, Simply Branded, and work with clients to develop and execute their digital strategy.
Some of the services we provide are: website development, social media management, Facebook Ad strategy and management, graphic design, copywriting, blogging, SEO, and more. I also speak at conferences and events about topics within my expertise (tech, healthcare, business, marketing, startups) and motivational speaking as well.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has definitely not been a smooth road. Some of the challenges included being a student entrepreneur and balancing work/life/school, dealing with co-founder disputes, needing services we could not afford, and plenty more. I learned quickly to teach myself the skills needed instead of paying an expert for their services. Gaining new skill sets was one way to overcome some of the obstacles.
Expy Health: My startup specializes in helping orthopedic patients navigate their journey before and after surgery. We have a mobile app and a wearable device that help patients stay on track with their recovery plan. We also help providers manage patients, improve outcomes, and increase profits through bundled payments. Our goal is to help providers transition to value-based care while improving outcomes and expediting recovery time.
We are known for our ability to remotely monitor recovery exercises and our patient-centric application. We designed the app with the patient in mind, unlike other patient monitoring tools on the market. I am proud of our dedication to improving not only a patient’s experience but aiding in care redesign across the board.
Simply Branded: My company works with businesses and individuals to develop a digital strategy and execute deliverables. We specialize in the design, content, and management of digital initiatives. We are known for our outstanding customer service and ability to act as CMO for our clients. I am proud of our wide range of portfolio items and companies as well as the quality of our work.
I love working with clients because each client is unique and brings a different set of challenges that we overcome with creativity and strategy. We are a one-stop shop for internet marketing and have the ability to tackle any project. We have a team of experts we leverage on a project basis depending on the scope of work.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I’ve had a lot of support along the way. My co-founder John Ikudaisi has been my right hand on many of the companies I’ve worked on so far. He balances me out, and it’s great to have someone in the trenches with me to bounce ideas and obstacles off of.
My family has been a tremendous support, specifically my mom (Ani Schomer) and sister (Tiffany Schomer). They have been my biggest cheerleaders and always believe in my decisions and vision, even if it’s not the traditional path in life. I would not have been able to financially support myself as an entrepreneur without the support of my family.
I’ve had great mentors as well, such as Greg Monterrosa and Renee Rock, both faculty from Cal Lutheran University. As a student entrepreneur, they provided a great deal of support and guidance. Richard Montmeny has been an advisor for the business and helped us achieve a milestone we had set for our sales/business development.
