Meet Agnese Cabala

Today we’d like to introduce you to Agnese Cabala.

Hi Agnese, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
It all started at a young age of five years old. My grandma and aunt would always want me to play with their hair while they told me supernatural stories, I would give them a scalp massage then backcomb their hair into place without really knowing how to do it, I just would do my thing. (I also shaved my parent’s daughter’s long hair on one side with clippers) got into BIG trouble. Cut to 17 years old, I told my dad I wanted to go to criminal collage in hopes of becoming an FBI Agent one day, my dad, Engineer for Ford almost fell of his chair, always saying that going to collage is a MUST. He sat me down and said; honey it’s not going to be what you think, you will be stuck in an office and I know you wouldn’t like that, you will want to travel the world and not be stuck doing office work, he suggested, “you been playing with hair since you were little, I recommend you try out cosmetology school,” my Junior High was offering a vocational education, didn’t want to waste time after graduation I singed up thinking at least I don’t waste my time and at least will know how to do my own makeup and hair since I was interested in all the beauty things. My Journey seemed soooo long within the two years of attending throughout all seasons, few of my classmates dropped out, I stayed strong wanted to dedicate myself to this craft I had a desire for, worked in a hair salon for few hours assisting and all of a sudden I’m moving to New York. Got into Warren Tricomi in 2008 that was the hottest, prestigious salon to be at, assisting some really talented Hairstylists, lots of long hours, sweat and some tears.

After a while, I was able to be on my own, realized I wanted to work somewhere else. I went to work with Ric Pipino another very talented hairstylist/friend that co-owned a salon in Soho, my creative mind was expanding. After 12 beautiful years, I moved to Los Angeles been living here for five years, what a journey! There were few times I kept thinking “do I need to switch careers” it was haaaaaard to do it all over again, probably the most challenging, it was not easy trying to figure out what places I like to work at, my clientele, etc. meanwhile I was traveling doing hair shows with Mike Karg, a dry haircut pioneer, I was teaching my visual dry hair cutting, enjoyed it very much, that kept my desire to stay in my career stronger and not to give up. I kept telling myself “please hold on, it WILL get better” COVID happened, a lot of Hairsytlist’s did change careers, moved away and finally, my opportunity came when I was working with a talented makeup artist Sabrina on our French Actress Nora Arnezeder, she suggested I work at Mare Salon, that I would be a great fit, reluctant of having bad salon experiences I hesitated but took a chance to meet and talk with one of the owners, we liked each other and I fell in love with the salon, ethics, and everyone that works there, it’s more like a creative bungalow space for super Uber talented hairstylist/colorists that were chosen very carefully for their individual craft. I feel very lucky to be a part of such a great supportive team!! Thank You!

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Of course it’s never easy or smooth a lot of “I’m not good enough” thoughts and high expectations to endure. Biggest struggle was to start all over again in another big city. Keep mind healthy by meditating and believing in my creative art. Determination and keeping the desire for art fresh!

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I found my love of Dry Haircutting, found my visual way of cutting the hair and adjusting to everyone’s face shape, hair texture. I love working on thick, curly hair, removing the weight putting texture, shape, it’s almost like dancing with the hair, zoning out a very meditative state. What I’m most proud of is learning how to do color, since that was my least of training in all the salons because I had to choose which side I wanted to work on. Also cutting Men’s hair, that was a struggle when I was younger, now that’s half of my clientele, I also love grooming! Suggesting what will look great on a client if they are married to one idea that won’t really work for them.

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
Playing with all the adults hair, cutting off all my Barbie’s hair…they were all bold by the time I finished!
