Meet Adam Cushman of Film 14 in Hollywood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Adam Cushman.

Adam, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
In 2011, a friend with a novel asked if I’d like to direct his book trailer. I’d never heard of book trailers at the time. After looking at some of the standard cookie cutter book trailers online I was up for the challenge. It seemed like a really cool idea for a new art form, one that hadn’t been explored or taken seriously yet. The author loved it and the experience creating something with no established rules yet excited me.

More friends with books saw the first trailer and said they wanted one too. So in 2012, we launched a company that makes videos exclusively for authors and publishers. Our thinking has always been that books deserve the music video treatment, meaning high-quality artistic content that brings in new audiences through means other than traditional advertising. We also knew that authors are on a budget, especially indie authors, so we created production tiers that are super high-quality, but at a fraction of normal production costs.

Since 2012, my company has produced over two hundred trailers for big publishing houses like Penguin and Hachette, established authors, and indie authors.

Has it been a smooth road?
Since the beginning, we’ve been in demand, partially because we’re one of the only companies doing this exclusively. The challenges have remained the same pretty much insofar as big publishing is concerned, like to what extent trailers drive sales, whether the bottom-line applies here or if authors should be thinking more long-term. For example, music videos are out in the world forever driving audiences who respond to what they’re seeing. Traditional trailers serve one purpose, and with an expiration. Our model is based on long-term results that will benefit authors not just today but years from now.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Film 14 – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
We create cinematic book trailers for authors and publishers.
