Today we’d like to introduce you to Sydney and Emilia Schmier.
Hi Sydney and Emilia, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
We’re twins so we’ve been doing this for quite a while. We started the band when we were 8 and have been doing it ever since! We’re originally from Detroit and we moved out to LA when we were 18. We’re currently working on our next project and can’t wait to start releasing music in the new year.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
We’ve definitely had our struggles over the last few years. We signed to a major record label when we were in high school and ended up moving to LA shortly after. We were shelved and unable to release any music. After we left the label, we felt really lost. It was difficult to figure out where our path went from there. We were heartbroken but it eventually ended up motivating us moving forward. The last few years have been about finding ourselves and figuring out our place in the world. Even though it was really hard on us back then, we’re happy it happened because we wouldn’t be who we are without it. We’re happy to say that we recently signed a deal with a new label and we’re going to be releasing music with them in 2023. It was definitely hard putting our trust out there again but we’re excited to see what the future holds this time around.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
We’re a twin duo band – Sydney is the lead vocalist and Emilia is the drummer. Our genre is pop/rock indie and our latest EP “Are We There Yet” is out now. We write songs about the struggles of being in our twenties. Love, loss, changes, and all of the emotions that come along with growing up. All we want is for people to relate to what we write about. There are so many people out there who are going through the same things we are and we want to write for them. There’s nothing better than performing a song for a crowd and seeing it really resonate.
The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
I (Sydney) ended up learning to produce on my own from home and I think it was the push I needed to get out of my comfort zone. So many people picked up new hobbies during the Covid-19 Crisis and the both of us definitely did the same… On top of that, everyone came out of covid learning a lot about themselves. We had never been alone for that long so it gave us a chance to be more self-sufficient. We took a lot of time to focus on our mental health. Therapy was one of the best things to come out the last two years. One of the biggest takeaways for us coming out of the pandemic is that we should be spending our time doing the things we love surrounded by the people we love.
