Today we’d like to introduce you to Sean Carney and Marc Avery of WOLVES.
Hi Sean and Marc, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
We both had been making music separately for years and met five years ago in Los Angeles attempting to write for other artists. We found that the chemistry was undeniable and it led us to form WOLVES, which was originally three members. With the band becoming a duo, it brought Sean and I (Marc) even closer together as a group and as homies. It allowed us to find out who were as WOLVES. We create music that sounds and feels like Chicago where I’m from and Los Angeles where Sean is from, and we’ve coined the genre “Surf Trap”.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road surely hasn’t been easy. We’ve had a lot of no’s along the way, but we don’t have any quit in us. A big struggle is continuing to push when the reason you’re being told no is somewhat frivolous. For instance, there is a huge importance placed on social media numbers and not talent or merit to gain attention of the labels. This is insanely frustrating because we spend most of our time cultivating our art. In some way, we know it’s a necessary evil so we have to adapt just like with anything else. We’ve grown to learn that we can connect in a different and more personable way with our listeners and it’s been great! So a negative turned into a positive.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We’ve been fortunate enough in the past 2-3 years to have our music and ourselves appear around the world in different capacities. We have appeared live on NBC’s Songland Season 2, which was an absolute dream come true for us. We recently had our song “Acceler8te” appear on The Fast and Furious nine trailer. We have had our music placed in the NBA on TNT, the MLB on TBS, The CW’s “All American” and many more. We find that our high-energy sound is perfect for the sports world, and we love connecting with new fans that have heard our music on TV. We both are strong songwriters who pride ourselves in writing everything we put out, which is not the case for most pop artists these days!
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
I grew up on the west side of Chicago and as hard as it was, I wouldn’t change anything. First, I’m black and I have freckles all over so it was a lot of ridicule growing up, Everyone had jokes all the time and it definitely made me insecure when I was younger. But, my mom taught me at an early age the importance of loving your own skin. It’s been a long time since I’ve had those insecurities, and with our next song “Melanin” we want other people to feel comfortable as well. While “Melanin” is surely about black beauty and is a love letter to black women, its overall message is self-love and confidence. Which is something that everyone should feel while they walk through life.
