Today we’d like to introduce you to Rocio Colmenero-Monroy.
Hi Rocio, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
In December of 2019, I remember vividly needing change. My youngest was almost six months old. I despised the fact that I had to take her out in the bitter cold. I didn’t want to but needed to.
It was then that an idea sparked in my mind, “why am I not utilizing my God-given gifts to work from home?” After being turned down for several positions, I knew my corporate career would not be able to excel unless I had a formal education. I struggled to believe I wasn’t capable, I just needed that chance.
Let’s backtrack.
Originally, I’m from Mexico. I came to this country at the age of 2, I’m 34, thankfully my mother entered the country legally with a Visa. Although we overstayed our stay and our Visas expired it was evident stability is what my mother yearned for me. I lived 22 years of my life being undocumented. I went to school like any other child, the only difference was that no matter how many A’s I received, college was a distant dream. Regardless, I pushed through hoping that when my time came a law would take effect. I knew the importance of getting good grades and college. My hard work paid off as I was given a full ride to Ball State University. Unfortunately, a law never passed and my legal status prohibited me from utilizing the scholarship and I was unable to attend college. Not being able to cough up 40K to attend college, I did the only thing I could do at the time I left high school, work and stay hopeful.
You’re probably wondering why does this matter? It matters because for so long I disqualified myself and my purpose because of my status. When I finally became a US Resident in 2013, thanks to my husband and with one child on the way, I realized going to college may have to be postponed for a bit longer. I kept working in banking, thinking, this is as good as it gets. I transitioned to a school district in order to have flexibility with my children.
Fast forward to 2019, working as a school administrative assistant, I craved more in life. I knew I wanted my children to know what actually made mom happy. So I dug deep into pursuing purpose and my creativity. The amazing part was I had always wanted to be a graphic designer yet always assumed I needed to have a degree.
I started as a Virtual Assistant in 2019 and I’ve transitioned to what I am now, a Creative Strategist | Graphic Designer. I’ve helped over 30+ businesses with social media, coaching, technology integration, logo/brand creation, website design and more. It started because I believed I could.
Creating isn’t the only thing I’m proud to say I do. In 2022, I founded & launched Somos Visionaries with my Co-host, Belen Saavedra. A podcast aimed to empower Latinas to pursue purpose and live a life free of fear [sin miedo]. Where a community of brave Latinas could help each other thrive and grow.
Advocating, empowering and nurturing other women is what fuels me to be better while showing my children the importance of being a good human.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The juggle between motherhood, comparison and being authentic is huge. Learning to trust myself along this journey has been challenging. I’ve leaned closely to Christ and other women who empower and share their wisdom.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a passionate and dedicated Latina Graphic Designer | Creative Strategist | Tech Virtual Assistant | Podcast Host with a keen eye for detail and a love for creativity.
