Today we’d like to introduce you to Ramone Hulet.
Hi Ramone, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m a producer born on Chicago’s south side. My mother taught me storytelling and my grandmother taught me so much about the politics of respect. Those two things very much make up who I am today. I’m new to Los Angeles but already have so much love for this city. I struggled with communication when I was young and films gave me a medium to communicate without just my words, it allowed people to get to know me. Today I’m a producer who gets to bring my stories and others to life.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’ve absolutely struggled… My biggest struggle was seeing myself. Imagine being a bird around all fish and beating yourself up because you can’t breathe underwater. It’s incredibly difficult to conquer the things in front of you without knowing the tools you have. My journey thus far has had a lot to do with that and because as an artist your professional and personal growth are so intertwined this has reflected in my work tenfold. So yes, I’ve struggled: I’ve struggled to find balance, get work, do good work, pick the right crew and select work. I’ve struggled figuring out where to apply pressure and what is too much or too little to ask. The film industry is not a paved road for anyone even if you were born with unlimited access. My road has certainly had speed bumps and potholes, but luckily I’m from Chicago and we know how to fix a flat tire.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a commercial producer from Chicago and the founder of BlackInfilm.com. I specialize in producing short-form projects and connecting people. It’s hard to say what sets me apart, but I have a style that I bring to everything I do — I value communication and transparency above all else. Communication because we can’t solve a problem if we don’t talk about it, and transparency because if there aren’t veils on information we can make better judgments. Knowledge over wealth is the biggest disparity among all groups and sharing information, thoughts and ideas allows us to see each other more clearly.
How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
Collaborators are very welcomed, I’ve been taking general meetings a lot this year and love to meet new people. You can support me by supporting BlackinFilm.com – it’s a database of U.S. based Black filmmakers and my proudest work. Through the database, I’ve helped over 1600 black filmmakers get connected directly to jobs, get work and get hired.
