Life & Work with Nilla Allin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nilla Allin.

Hi Nilla, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Writing has been a creative outlet for me ever since I was a child. When I was young, I’d spend my free time writing songs, raps, poems, stories and movie scripts. In college, I began writing raps and songs in my free time to take my mind off the stress I was dealing with from school. My rap abilities started off as a secret, but as time went on, my friends started to become aware of my hidden talent. They pushed me to share my raps with the world. In 2019 I posted a rap freestyle that ended up going viral across my social media platforms. As I started posting more videos, more and more people would ask where they could find my music. At this time, I wasn’t making music, I was only rapping for fun; but in 2020 I decided to take music seriously after graduating from the University of California, San Diego. Now with college out of the way, I had more time to write, release and record my music. Since I work a corporate job with a technical and analytical focus, I am always yearning for a creative outlet outside of work. In 2020, I began creating TikToks and immediately started going viral for my creative comedy skits and goofy, personable personality. I decided to combine my talents and create skits that promoted my own music. From 2020-2021, only one year of consistently making music, I was able to garnish over a million organic streams from my own music promotion. My large Tiktok and Instagram audience allowed opportunities for a plethora of partnerships and brand collaborations. With the income I make from social media and my corporate job, I have been able to take those funds and reinvest it into my music career.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
So far, it has been a pretty smooth road! Being an optimist, I spend most of my time focusing on the positive and the many blessings I’ve received rather than the challenges. My biggest struggle currently has been balancing my work life with my extracurricular activities. I come from a traditional household where it’s celebrated when you graduate from college, immediately start working in your career for a prestigious company, and work there until you die. Although this is what I was taught, I have no intentions on living this way. I honestly want to take the leap of faith and start prioritizing my talents outside of my job but… *whispers*… I’m scared. I want to remain an independent artist, and the only way I’ve been able to fund my music career and stay independent is from my corporate job income. This industry is VERY expensive, and losing this security will definitely put me in a different position; however, I also know that if I put more energy and time working for myself, prioritizing my passions, and making those sacrifices to advance my career, I will be rewarded for it. Being an extremely indecisive Sagittarius has been one of my downfalls. It has definitely been an internal struggle mentally preparing to take this risk.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
To tell you a little bit about my background, I attended UC San Diego where I graduated in 2020 with a BS degree in Human Developmental Sciences with a specialization in Equity and Diversity. Right out of college, I was hired full-time for an aerospace company based in Los Angeles, California. Now since the boring stuff is out of the way, a great chunk of my income also comes from social media. In addition to being a musical artist, I am also a content creator/ influencer/online entertainer. I am known for my relatable, empowering music and viral comedy TikTok skits. I have also became known on TikTok for my exceptional music marketing and video editing skills. Before TikTok, I also had a YouTube channel with my two best friends (BTK Beauty) that I started my first year of college that accumulated over 80,000 subscribers. Even though we were very inconsistent with the channel due to the demand of school, a lot of my fans knew me from my YouTube channel and have followed my journey over the years. In the past, I’ve been hired to create social media content for brands such as UGG, Victoria’s Secret Pink, Pretty Little Thing, Spotify, Instagram Reels, and many more.
