Life & Work with Nikhil Walton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nikhil Walton.

Hi Nikhil, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m a 20-something photographer, videographer, all-around artistic person. My heritage is Indian, African & Italian so I have a lot of different influences from different cultures. I was born and raised in the Boston area, I made a name for myself there in the music scene as a freelance photographer & as live concert photographer for “Leedz Edutainment.” In all my experiences, I’ve gotten the opportunity to work alongside some of my favorite artists such as Talib Kweli, Pharcyde, Earthgang, J.I. the Prince of New York, Coi Leray, Blxst and so many more. I moved to LA last year, and I am working to build a name for myself in the industry here. My goal is to have people feel emotion & be connected to the videos and photos I take – capturing the raw & realness of the moment.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The biggest / most recent obstacle I’ve had to face is networking during the pandemic. When a lot of the work I do is in-person and live concerts, having the shut down threw quite a few challenges my way. I also find that creating a lifestyle surrounding freelance photography/videography can be a bumpy road, such as collaborating with other creatives, invoicing & getting paid on time, etc. But no matter the problem, there is always a solution – as long as the drive & the hard work is there.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Although I started my career doing photography & I am learning that my true passion is in videography. I love the different angles, the combination of different filming locations. I try to find abandoned or unique places to keep the shoot interesting. As I mentioned before – I like to capture the raw realness of the moment so I tend to stay away from heavy editing or photoshopping. I recently just purchased an 80’s Minolta Talker (film camera) and have been experimenting with film which has been really fun – and once again very real. It reminds me of memories and the nostalgia of looking at old photos with my family – now I’ll be able to do the same in the future.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Respect is earned not given. Staying true to yourself and making sure nobody takes advantage of your skills.
