Life & Work with Nick Cavalier

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nick Cavalier.

Hi Nick, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started as a fine artist and musician as a troubled young kid in Cleveland, Ohio. It was a way for me to express myself and my issues in a productive manner. In 2009, I graduated from a small art school in Ohio into the economic recession and took a job in Chicago working in advertising. Even though the job was not for me, it taught me how to communicate my ideas effectively and work with a specific goal in mind.

I quit that job and dove head first into making my own films, both commercially and artistically. In 2014, I made my first feature Documentary; “Forced Perspective” and moved to LA to pursue my dream of being a commercial director and eventually, a filmmaker. I haven’t looked back since.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Honestly, most people in the film come from money. They can sit back on that savings account, not worry about rent and just start making things. I do not have that luxury. The hardest part for me is balancing the work that must be done to survive and continue to make things that are expressing my vision. Having the energy to do that is often a matter of discipline, which I have a lot of.

Sometimes these two marry and create a beautiful piece of art. Over the past 10 years, I’ve been able to close that gap as much as I can, and that line continues to blur to this day. The old expression, one for the reel, one for the meal is what I have built the foundation of my career on.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a director/filmmaker who specializes in high production value documentary films. Showcasing real people as characters inside of an archetypal narrative. I try to select underdog stories that are examples of human perseverance and overcoming struggle.

I also create narrative and commercial works, including music videos, docu-driven commercials, comedy, and brand stories. I try to bring my voice and style to each piece, including high continuity, dynamic camera work and story structure influenced by greek myth.

The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
1. Not to trust the institutions of this country.
2. Self-reliance and resilience.
3. Enjoyment of the simple things in life.
