Today we’d like to introduce you to Lindsey Price.
Can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today. You can include as little or as much detail as you’d like.
I was raised in Boston, Massachusetts, and studied at an all-girls boarding school in Wellesley. I’ve always been interested in the Arts. I spent two summers doing precollege programs studying painting at Maryland Institute College of Art and UCLA while still in high school. Then I moved out to California when I was 17 to attend the California Institute of the Arts.
During my time at the California Institute of the Arts, I took classes in various departments. I have a degree in Photography and Digital Media, but I found myself taking courses in the graphic design and animation departments.
I’m grateful that Calarts allows its students to take classes in other departments as it opened my eyes to other art forms and helped me discover who I am as an artist. As a result, I began to move away from photography and started getting into the digital art world than into the physical art world.
Has it been a smooth road? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It’s certainly been a bumpy road with lots of twists and turns, but I’ve always been interested in various aspects of the art world. I started oil painting in high school then I moved into conceptual photography. I started photographing bands and then moved into album art and vinyl design. Finally, I moved into digital art, focusing on collage and photomontages. While I still do all of that, my focus is now on mixed media art, focusing on collage and painting. I’ve always been a little all over the place, and in some ways, I still am.
We’d love to learn more about your work. What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of? What sets you apart from others?
I create experiential collages that represent a surreal, dream-like dimension of our universe, pushing the boundaries of what’s possible. While many images and pieces of our current universe are visible, they are fluidly combined so it is not always clear where one image starts, and another begins. It is a distortion of our reality, including elements that could not possibly exist or be identified in mankind as it is. It is an unleashed visual expression of my cravings in the world – allowing me the freedom to let go of myself and escape reality, if only temporarily.
My work represents images of a more harmonious matriarchal future. Much of my work features a woman – whom I identify as myself. I create my art with the hope that others will travel through the images I have put together and be awakened to their own desire to express themselves – in whatever form this might take.
It took me a while to find a way to combine all my interests and studies into one medium.
I compose all of my pieces digitally, and I execute them physically. I collect old magazines from various decades and scan images that I use to create my collages. I mix paint with paper cutouts to make my physical compositions. The work consists of many layers and is time-consuming. All of my pieces are compiled on a wood base and sealed with resin.
I’m constantly experimenting with new techniques such as resin painting, laser cutting different materials, and exploring and pushing the bounds of my aesthetic.
My work can be presented in various ways, such as large format prints or projections. I’ve also started to animate my digital compositions.
Do you have any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general? What has worked well for you?
Personally, networking has always been difficult for me. I’m outgoing and social, but I’m not the best schmoozer, haha! I’ve found that reaching out to galleries, agencies, and artists I want to work with has been helpful. Most importantly, by constantly creating, and allowing your mind to expand you will be rewarded in one way or another.
