Today we’d like to introduce you to Jacqueline Chao.
Hi Jacqueline, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’ve been an avid tabletop gamer for more than 20 years. Prior to 2016, I had always played games with people I knew in places I was familiar with. In 2017, I decided to step out of my comfort zone and I attended several gaming conventions as a demo professional. These experiences deepened my passion and understanding of the gaming community.
Having a career in design and motion graphics, my desire to “create” motivated me to fuse my skills and love for my hobby together and I became a content creator in 2018. Of course, I couldn’t have done it without the help of my friends, many of whom are working in the entertainment industry professionally and are just as passionate about tabletop gaming as I am. The videos aim to showcase the competitive and tactical side of the tabletop gaming experience.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Content creators always get negative feedback that we can all learn and grow from, but as a minority woman, I also get my fair share of unconstructive comments. At first, it bothered me a lot. Comments about my accent often came across as racist as I’m an American born citizen. Comments about how I’m not actually a tabletop gamer came across as sexist since I highly doubt something like that ever gets mentioned about content creators of the opposite sex. Whatever the case, I just wished that the focus would be on the information that I was providing.
Over time my skin thickened and I learned how to brush the attackers off, but then came the pandemic. Our two main types of content, which are convention interviews and full game play-throughs, have pretty much been shut down due to the social distancing mandate. We are hoping that we can get back on track to producing and uploading new content weekly when we are able to resume all activities as usual.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My YouTube channel, Show Me How to Win, debuted in early 2018. To set my channel apart from the crowded tabletop game content market space, which was saturated with reviews and how to play videos, I decided to focus on an area of gaming that was rarely discussed at that time. Our main sources of content come from interviews at conventions and working closely with cast members to put together high-quality full game strategic play-throughs.
I’m proud to have created a collection of information-driven videos that could provide insight to players who want to dig deeper into strategies and tactics.
What matters most to you? Why?
Show Me How to Win focuses the tabletop game genre and the strategies within them. Keeping my content informative and relevant to this core concept is very important to me.
When it came to the presentation, I felt it was important to represent women in the hobby as serious gamers. I wanted to make it clear that women don’t just play casual games and we’re also in it to win it. The cast of our playthroughs and a large part of our filming crew are women.
We also found that we could act as a vehicle to introduce more games from Taiwan to the western audience. Having strong ties to Taiwan, I could see that a lot of great games from this region were not readily available in the US. Therefore, I wanted to bring awareness to some great Taiwanese games so that gamers everywhere don’t miss out.
