Life & Work with Daniel Overberger

Today we’d like to introduce you to Daniel Overberger.

Hi Daniel, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started as a student at Runyon Yoga about 20 years ago. When I became a teacher the teachers (Kamala, Steve and Hannah) started using me as a substitute teacher right away. This would have been 2005. I taught a lot of classes as a substitute in my first few years. Eventually, I took on a permanent teaching position at Runyon in the same place I started as a student.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
As I look back, most of it was very smooth. As if it was all meant to be. But, in the moment sometimes things may have seemed like a struggle. We are right out in public so I’m sure you can imagine all the strange things that have happened. A man walked naked through my class once. That was more shocking than a struggle in the moment and now it’s just a funny story I tell people.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I have been out in public, providing the service of yoga to the people of Hollywood for about 17 years. I am known for a down-to-earth attitude and showing up. I have over time, also become a tourist attraction of some kind. I have taught people from all over the world that stopped by for a class during vacation. They heard about me and wanted to experience yoga in the park. The people that take my class are from all walks of life. It is a very diverse group. We all come together for the experience of yoga. I’m very happy about that.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Showing up all the time has been very important. I know that seems obvious. But I have seen the opposite. Also, I have spent a lot of time making my instructions very simple and extremely clear. As I said earlier, I have students from all walks of like and from all over so, some don’t consider English their first language. So it’s important to be understood in a simple and clear way.
