Life & Work with Cash Harrington

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cash Harrington.

Hi Cash, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
When I was young, I was surrounded by music as many of my family members introduced me to great artists. I was able to watch some of my favorite artists/bands live and was amazed by how a small group of musicians could impact such a large audience. I knew I wanted to do that one day. My Nana got me an acoustic guitar for my tenth birthday and I began taking lessons. I started to sing and eventually got into songwriting as well. I was intrigued by the idea of telling a story and encapsulating emotions into music with lyrics. I started to busk on Third Street Promenade in Santa Monica when I was twelve. That grew into performing in other places such as Breweries, Farmer’s Markets, and more. Most recently, I performed at the Photogenics Fundraiser for the Boys & Girls Club of Malibu. I can also be seen in the new Idina Menzel Masterclass on Studio.com. As of now, I am focusing on building my audience, and continuing to perform, write, and record.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Music is not the easiest thing to pursue. Sometimes you feel like you’re not progressing or going anywhere, and it gets hard to keep going. Self-doubt gets in the way and I’ve had to push through it many times. Also, it can be hard to be taken seriously as a young artist. People might think that you don’t truly care about music, and you have to show them otherwise. Many venues don’t accept minors so I always have to search for the right place to perform. It took time, but eventually, I found people who believe in me and that’s why I will never stop pursuing music.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a 16-year-old singer/songwriter. I’ve been performing live all over Los Angeles for years. I love to write music that tells a story and emotionally impacts my audience. I’m a passionate live performer and get lost in the music. I always experiment with different styles in order to develop my own sound. I want people to have the same deep connection that I have with certain artists, albums and songs with me one day. Genres that define my music are alt-rock, singer/songwriter and indie. My biggest influences include Jeff Buckley, Radiohead, The Smiths, The Smashing Pumpkins, and more.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
The music industry is constantly expanding and a wide variety of music is being created. Music is becoming more accessible which means more people are able to listen, create and distribute. This is great because more artists are able to have a voice and a platform for their music. As technology is advancing, artists no longer need huge, expensive studios to record their music. They are able to do it themselves which makes the process a lot more creative overall. Artists are now able to have full artist freedom over their music. As time goes on, the possibilities for artists are growing and growing.
