Life & Work with Carrie Brown-Kornarens

Today we’d like to introduce you to Carrie Brown-Kornarens.

Hi Carrie, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Hi there. I was a motion graphics designer for over two decades, and the workload was affecting my health. I had been wanting to get out of the entertainment industry for a while, but I wasn’t sure how to do it. I took a permaculture course and received a certificate, but couldn’t afford to switch careers at that time. I was having more health issues, I was burnt out, and I took a sabbatical. I figured I’d try something new, so I took a pottery class. I decided this is what I want to do full time, so I’ve been making pottery for almost 5 years now. I started selling my ceramics online in 2020, and I sell them at a local shop called Stuff in Hollywood.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has been challenging, and I’m constantly learning new things. There have been struggles with my health such as tenosynovitis in one of my wrists, and also osteoarthritis in my fingers. I’ve been able to make it work with different pottery techniques to accommodate these setbacks.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I make functional pottery pieces that can be used around your home. I’m probably most known for my olive oil plates, and air plant holders. I’m most proud of my hanging planters, and tiered dessert stands. My inspiration comes from vintage items, Japanese pottery, everyday objects, and graphic design elements. I use a lot of clean lines, yet I also do more organic sgraffito (carving) techniques. These influences can be seen in my work aesthetic.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
My family, and my rescue dogs. I’m happy to have the support of my family, and unconditional love from my dogs. They fill me with so much joy.
