Today we’d like to introduce you to Alton Allen.
Hi Alton, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’m a singer-songwriter and producer currently based in Los Angeles. I started writing music when I was around 14 and basically never stopped. Throughout my career, I’ve been lucky enough to be able to tour the world as a musician and work with a large amount of other talented artists. Alton Allen is my solo project, and I’ve been putting out my first record under that name this past year.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I think when you choose a life as an artist, you’re making a decision that stability will oftentimes not be a part of your life. I’d say that my struggles have been pretty part-and-parcel of many other young artists who have made the decision to keep their work as a constant companion. In a lot of ways, though, creating music is a means of dealing with struggle, and one thing that keeps me going is no matter what hardship I’m facing, I can always write a song about it later.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’ve always been obsessed with pop music from the 60’s and 70’s and I think that sound is something I specialize in. I have a background in classical composition, as well as performance, so chord progressions are always the part of the process I enjoy the most. I’d say I’m known for complex, although digestible, pop-music composition and production. I try with the lyrics too 🙂
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I would say that life is full of risks. I like to know everything I can about a particular situation before I embark into it, however, there’s also and element of chaos that I believe our lives thrive in. You really don’t know what each day is going to bring, and while you can be prepared, you can never know for sure. So I think the better we are when we’re in our idle periods, the better prepared we are for when things get risky.
