Today we’d like to introduce you to Aksa Lima.
Hi Aksa, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I was born and raised in a Brazilian favela (slum/guetto) and thanks to a scholarship, I managed to graduate from a film school in São Paulo. The education and experiences I had in college have completely changed my life. I’ve been directing commercials and documentaries for seven years now and opened my own film production company in Brazil (Lampião Content). My career has evolved since then, I have worked with major agencies and international brands and my work has been recognized with awards at advertising festivals around the world.
This is just a summary of my career and I find it very difficult to convey what I mean in just these words. I grew up in an environment where it was almost impossible to imagine yourself working and making a living with art. It was very difficult to find opportunities, make connections, when there was no one of my family or friends working in this industry.
That said, I think it’s my mission to tell the world where I come from and where I’m going. More than that, tell my people that they can come too. Now in LA, I’m taking another step in my career towards the entertainment industry. And I really hope it will be a beautiful journey.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Here I am seen as a Latina, but in Brazil I am seen as a white woman. So, it’s been a long way to find my voice and hit the right opportunities to present my work as something that represents the South American people, my social background, our miscegenation and the variety of voices.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a Brazilian Film Director. My sensitivity in portraying people from different backgrounds makes my portfolio very varied and flexible. Human emotion challenges me to always evolve my way of telling stories. I love portraying women, children and including different artistic expressions within commercial films.
I have also experience in documentaries. As a screenwriter in a documentary that is on a Brazilian streaming (Em Mim, Oceano – 2021. Available on Canal Off) and as writer, director and producer at two documentaries currently in the post-production process.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
People. Los Angeles can be an amazing place for you to interact with people from all over the world, learn about them, about the culture they came from, and I think that’s awesome. I miss the intimacy that the Latin friendships have! It can take a while to be close to someone here. However, I’ve made strong connections with people here who have made my experience in Los Angeles amazing!
