Life & Work with Rachael Short

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rachael Short.

Hi Rachael, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My passion for photography started at a young age after I picked up my dad‘s 35mm Canon camera. It continued on through high school where I spent hours printing in the darkroom and developing film. I then attended Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara and received my bachelor’s degree. After college, I moved back to Carmel and started a wedding and photography business and opened up Gallery Exposed in 2009 with a fellow photographer. In 2010, I was in a car accident that left me a quadriplegic ending my formal shooting pursuits. I now divide my time between physical therapy and capturing images with my iPhone. I enjoy taking black and white photographs of nature, people and places, exploring the relationship between light and shadow. I then transform these images into Platinum prints with help from a friend.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I laughed out loud when I read this question. No, it has not been a smooth road. Becoming paralyzed at the age of 28 is a struggle I could have never imagined happening but with this struggle, I grow and continue on.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a fine art photographer specializing in black and white photography. I am proud that I have found a way to continue my art even after my spinal cord injury. I have found a way to blend new technology with traditional black and white photography to create beautiful, fine art prints. I think what sets me apart is my drive to never give up.

Pricing:

  • Fine art calendars $30
  • $100 print offerings
  • Platinum prints $450
