Life & Work with Moriah Smith

Today we’d like to introduce you to Moriah Smith.

Hi Moriah, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started my hair journey at the age of 17. My hair was around my waist and severely heated damaged. I knew at this moment I needed to change something. I started going natural for around two years. My hair is now past tailbone length. This journey took a lot of patience and TLC. I’ve had so many set back but keep pushing forward. My goal is to inspire other African American women to love their natural hair and believe that they can grow their hair to any length.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Starting off, it was rough. My goal was to get a wash & go on my transitioning hair. Dealing with the two different textures was so hard it broke off my hair in so many ways. I thought natural products would save me but it did the exact opposite. Completely natural products were hurting me more than helping me because it wasn’t creating any slip for detangling my hair; this caused my hair to break off a lot and become so thin I can see through my hair. This taught me to start listening to my hair instead of other people’s opinions. My hair needed the silicones for slip to be detangled and that took me a year to learn that sadly.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Right now, I coach other women helping them build their curly hair routines for what they strive for, whether that’s length, volume, or definition. I speak to my clients about what they want and I build routines for their hair. Wash days are a full event for curly-haired women and it involves pre-pooing, detangling, shampooing, deep conditioning, and styling your hair. This can take up to 6-9 hours based on how long your hair is. I specialize just in growing natural curly hair mainly. I’m known for this. I have people all over following my tips through my Instagram @more.curlzzz and YouTube @MoreRiah. I always get stopped and complimented on my curly hair and I get asked tons of questions about how I got it so healthy. I feel very proud for how far I’ve come and how much I’ve learned. My hair went from waist length to past tailbone length in a span of eight months and it’s healthier than ever. What sets me apart from other’s pages is that I modify anything to fit your schedule and meet your goals. I take time with each of my clients and try to stay active in my client’s hair goals.

Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
During Covid-19, I’ve learned so much. This crisis has been a stress on many people’s minds. I took this very slow time to focus on bettering myself and helping others most with their hair. I knew a lot of people were home without their loved ones during this time and this can cause depression in a lot of people’s lives. When people feel this way their health is on an all-time low and the first thing to take a hit is our hair. Hair helps us feel confident and even creates an inner self-love especially at this time when we need to feel this way to combat struggles. I started really documenting my hair growth tips most at this time and I kept getting tons of DM’s about women feeling so helpless with their hair struggles. My heart just reached out and wanted to help them the best way I can.
