Today we’d like to introduce you to Julian Shah-Tayler.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started in London in the band Magic House, progressed to touring the world with electroclash project “Whitey” co-writing songs featured in Breaking Bad and GTA4. I just won an award for my remix with Daisy O’Dell for the Winachi Tribe. It’s been a good recent few years for me as singer/producer/writer Julian Shah-Tayler aka The Singularity.
I am currently very proud to be working with the legendary Robert Margouleff (Stevie Wonder/Devo) on the new album. One of the shows I scored won two Emmys: “Actors on Actors” I won a “Golden Trailer” award for his work with Lana Del Ray on Disney’s “Maleficent” trailer. One of my songs performed in front of Bill Clinton, Robert De Niro and Martin Scorsese for “Unite for Humanity” charity at the Oscars. Three of my songs were the “hits” for the focus band in the music movie “Plush” directed by Catherine Hardwicke (Twilight) I also recorded a sadly unreleased album with Joaquin Phoenix and Antony Langdon (Spacehog) as well as musical directing Island Def Jam artist Kerli 4 of my songs co-written with Siobhan Fahey (Bananarama/Shakespear’s Sister) were the main songs for the Astrid Angel band in the movie “Riot On Redchurch St” directed by “Trip City” and Martin Amis’ “Money” author/director Trevor Miller A remix I did of Nico’s “These Days” with Daisy O’Dell was featured as KCRW’s “one to watch” I also cofounded a charity called “Art Angeles” teaching underprivileged kids music in Watts. My Song “Talking In Your Sleep” also won the ASCAP/Homegrown Hits best song of 2013 earning sponsorship from Protools and ESP guitars Before COVID, we were selling out venues with my David Bowie tribute band: “The Band That Fell To Earth”, my Depeche Mode tribute band “Strangelove” and moonlighting as singer/keyboard player in Cure tribute band “The Cured”.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It’s been hard to make it pay. There is a dwindling music selling market. Sales have mostly disappeared as we go to streaming, so I have had to make my own videos and produce all my own music. Mostly playing all the instruments except when special guests such as David J (Bauhaus) and MGT (Mission UK/Tricky) come and collaborate. I also remix people such as Wayne Hussey (Mission UK) with Beauty In Chaos and Weird Wolves (Ava Gore/Raf Colantonio)
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am known for intricate and musical electronic dance rock as well as singer-songwriter stuff. My material has been described as what if Bowie, Depeche Mode and The Cure had a baby. I am most proud of my solo work. I have written and recorded over 400 pieces of music and worked with some magnificent and famous artists. I produce songs from scratch and can take a piece by an artist and make it completely different or as polished as I can. I love reimagining stuff from the vocal only for example. No indication of where the song “should” go.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I was very serious and always in the music. I was only interested in music and girls. Not dissimilar to a lot of my friends at the time. No hobbies, no sport. Just music
