Life and Work with Courtney Jane

Today we’d like to introduce you to Courtney Jane.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Courtney. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Pursuing my career in hairstyling, I began at Aveda Institute Los Angeles. I started with a strong foundation of color theory and thousands of hours of practical training. After graduating, I spent a year assisting celebrity hairstylists in Beverly Hills and West Hollywood. I continued to strengthen my foundation of theory and technical training until I knew I was ready for change. The east-sider in me was ready for a more relaxed salon environment where I could grow and prosper. In perfect timing, The Establishment Salon in Silver Lake was looking for a new stylist. There was instant chemistry with the owners, Howie and Carly, at my interview. To this day, I’m still happy building and prospering at The Establishment. But my journey is not yet over, there’s still much more to come!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Nothing worthwhile ever involves a smooth road. My road was full of struggle! From being flat out broke to just wanting to downright quit. It takes a lot of practice to do hair and it takes a lot of time to build up a clientele. My advice to other women starting their journey: if you’re uncomfortable, you’re growing. Stick with it and do the most often what you’re most uncomfortable doing. I used to HATE hair cutting. Can you guess why? (Because I’ll be honest I was horrible at it.) I decided to make it my favorite thing and spent the majority of time assisting a haircutting specialist. I watched it over and over and did it over and over despite my nervousness. Because of that, I’m now a proficient cutter.

Please tell us about Courtney Jane Hair.
I specialize in balayage and dimensional color as well as dry haircutting. I pride myself on making sure every color is custom to my guest’s skin tone, hair texture, hair cut, and personal style. As far as cutting goes, I set myself apart by using a dry-cutting technique. This allows me to see the hair in the most precise way. I can see exactly what needs to be cut and what needs to be kept. I also am proud to use a product line that is 98% natural and cruelty-free. The Establishment also recycles 95% of all materials used.

Often it feels as if the media, by and large, is only focused on the obstacles faced by women, but we feel it’s important to also look for the opportunities. In your view, are there opportunities that you see that women are particularly well-positioned for?
Anything and everything as a simple answer. I don’t think I can say as women we’re inherently (because of gender) well-positioned for x,y, or z. Some women are leaders, entrepreneurs, or “girl bosses.” Some women are caregivers, mechanics, or cosmetologists. The beauty is our opportunity is no longer confined to the traits of what “being a woman” is supposed to mean.
