Today we’d like to introduce you to Ali Nelson.
Ali, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’m a storyteller and an athlete. I grew up outdoors, playing sports and making films on our families camcorder. I always felt that these two pursuits complimented each other. It was like 2 parts of my brain were working together to teach me how to work hard and continue to evolve in order to refine my skills.
However, as I got older, I felt pressured to pick between being an athlete or being an artist. It seemed like that was the way of the world. When you grow up, you choose the one thing you want to do… forever.
I picked artistry. I began my career in post-production for television shows right after college and it consumed all my time. I stopped creating my own content and I began to feel very uninspired. It wasn’t until I took a hiatus from TV to get my yoga certification that I felt the bug to create again. Suddenly, balance was reintroduced into my life and the more I got involved in health & fitness, the more I felt the drive to make content. I now teach yoga, pilates, & fitness classes, make my own films and work on TV. My current project that I’m very excited about is a documentary series about youth activist from around the world.
Has it been a smooth road?
The road is always full of bumps, and that’s OK! I feel like the trick is to not fear the bumps in the road but embrace them, which is easier said than done. I’ve found that fear is the biggest hindrance to my own happiness and success. When we make decisions from a place of fear, it’s limiting and not sincere to who we truly are. I feared that asking for help would make me look weak, I feared straying from my chosen career path would leave me broke, I feared the unknown. We all have the power to create our reality and even if we’re afraid or uncertain, we can still choose to completely change up our lives at any point. For anyone starting or restarting their journey, I would say aim for balance in your life and if the scales get tipped, don’t trip! Work hard for what you want and don’t let fear deter you from doing what’s right for YOU.
Please tell us more about what you do, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
As I mentioned earlier, I’m very excited to be creating a documentary series about youth activist around the world. This series follows the unique perspectives and journeys of young people across the globe who are compelled to create the future they wish to live in. The series is currently in post-production and my film partner and I are looking for the perfect home platform for it.
What advice would you give to someone at the start of her career?
It’s okay to be afraid, but please don’t let your fears stop you from achieving greatness.
