Inspiring Conversations with Victoria Holly

Today we’d like to introduce you to Victoria Holly.

Victoria Holly

Victoria, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I was always captivated by the beautiful spaces showcased in Elle Decor and Architectural Digest magazines and even at a young age, I was so appreciative of how we design the spaces we live in. I used to cut out pieces of furniture and arrange them into little mood boards – even at age eight! Fast forward several years and I was fortunate enough to secure an internship with a world-renowned interior designer, which offered me an incredible transformative experience into the world of design. It laid the foundation for understanding design principles as well as the inner workings of running a design firm. After a couple of years of following her, I decided to start my own interior design firm. I initially started my firm in Boston and New York City and these were two great cities to start in – they offered challenging spaces where we needed to work within the constraints of homeowners’ associates, city codes, and small square footage. This working environment was so important to developing our craft and being able to develop beautiful designs while working within boundaries. Now in Los Angeles, it’s now been over ten years and our firm has flourished. And thankfully, we have a lot fewer furniture install cancellations due to snow days!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Initially, when my firm was based on the East Coast, I faced a dilemma. I was hesitant about expanding the business too much – with press coverage or hiring a larger team – because deep down, I knew that our family’s ultimate goal was to return to Los Angeles. It felt like I was outgrowing my interior design “pot,” so to speak. It was a challenging decision to hold back and not fully embrace the opportunities that came our way. However, once we finally made the move to Los Angeles, I was like, “Okay! Let’s go!” The relocation injected new energy into our company! We also have learned over the years that who we work with is so important. We spend half of our time working directly with our clients, but the other half is spent working closely with our vendors. They become like colleagues and are an integral part of our company. We’re only as good as the vendors we work with! It’s amazing to wake up one day and realize that you’ve been working with a particular upholsterer for a decade. These relationships become deeply ingrained in our business. Over the years, we’ve learned to be highly selective when it comes to choosing vendors, not only for our clients and the quality of their homes but also for ourselves!

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
At our award-winning design firm, Victoria Holly Interiors, we take a comprehensive approach to creating exceptional interiors that cater to our clients’ style preferences and lifestyles. By partnering with our clients and understanding their unique needs, we deliver personalized and timeless designs. With each project, we work to design warm, welcoming, and unique spaces with well-curated pieces that stand the test of time. We source high-quality and custom furnishings and decor, showcasing our commitment to creating enduring spaces that exude elegance and sophistication. By working with trusted experts, we ensure that each aspect of the project is executed to the highest standards and aligns perfectly with our vision.

How do you think about luck?
Where do I start! I wouldn’t be where I was today if I hadn’t been fortunate enough to land an incredible interior design internship which taught me everything I needed to know to go out on my own. It provided me with invaluable experience and knowledge that laid the foundation for my career. Additionally, moving my firm to new locations like Boston and NYC opened doors to unique design challenges and expanded my relationships and gave me unparalleled experience in so many facets of design. On the other hand, bad luck or unforeseen challenges have also played a role. There have been times when projects didn’t go as planned, despite careful preparation and execution. For example, if a manufacturer faced delays or a client’s vision changed unexpectedly. These moments have taught me resilience and the importance of adaptability in navigating the unpredictable nature of the industry. And these moments have made us solution-oriented.
