Inspiring Conversations with Seun Phillips and Omonye Phillips of My Dream BIG Club

Today we’d like to introduce you to Seun Phillips and Omonye Phillips.

Hi Seun and Omonye, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
We are a husband and wife combo that was looking for a community to discuss transformative topics and leverage each other to dream BIG outside our regular day jobs. We started by bringing a group of friends together at our house to discuss goal setting during new year’s eve and the session was so inspiring and motivating our friends suggested we should do more gatherings. A month later, we then invited 12 people to our home where we sent an agenda and guiding questions prior to the meeting for invitees to review. To our surprise again, everyone who attended was raving about the club and at the moment we knew we were on to something. This led to us hosting the discussions at other people’s homes, to community centers, and then ultimately hosting a conference with 200 people.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
No, as our dreams started to grow, the road also became rougher. We had to deal with funding issues, juggling with our two full-time jobs and children, finding partners and sponsors to believe in our vision. Our biggest challenge and test was when we came up with the wild idea to host our own conference and rent out all the conference rooms at Greektown hotel in Detroit, MI. We knew we wanted 200 attendees, but having $0 for marketing and having to sell 100+ tickets was quite the struggle. There were multiple times where we would work on the conference at 4am in the morning before having to go to work and ask ourselves, “Why are we doing this and why are we putting ourselves through this agony.” These were very legit questions and it was very comforting to know that we were both on this journey together to encourage the other person to keep pushing through. In starting a business, there is always the hurdle of explaining the business model and the problem that the business is solving. Our struggle was articulating to the masses why they should spend over $100 to purchase a ticket to an inaugural conference from a company where a majority of the attendees have never heard of.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about My Dream BIG Club?
Our brand is focused on bringing together a diverse group of people who are looking to realize their dreams. We are predominantly a group of black professionals that gather to talk about transformative topics and leverage each other to dream BIG. If you love to engage in transformative discussions and want to surround yourself with positive people who are determined, this is the avenue for you.

Due to covid and newly moving from Detroit to LA in 2020, we had not hosted any in-person event in about two years. Once we got the green light to host in-person events again, we quickly started planning our first event called “Feed Your Mind”. This event focused on mental health and created a safe space for people to gather and be themselves. It was a sold-out event with great attendance and it provided people with the ability to be vulnerable and open in a setting where support is being provided. Feed Your Mind, as the name suggests, pertains to attendees feeding their brain with intellectual conversations and their bellies with delicious food. Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
My Dream BIG Club focuses on bringing professionals within the 25-45 age group. Each event focuses on a particular transformative topic, our last event in February focused on mental health. We do not see many organizations focusing on mental health in general and more particularly supporting mental health for the black population. As our name suggests, people associate our brand with dreaming BIG.
