Inspiring Conversations with Dave Joyner of 82Infinity Media

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dave Joyner.

Hi Dave, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My love of music began as a kid but manifested into artistry in high school. I began my journey in hip-hop as an artist opening for major acts that came to campus while in college at the University of Delaware. I released a few independent projects but struggled with getting quality instrumentals, so I began making my own beats. After really falling in love with that part of the creative process, I began rapping less and producing more.

After graduating, I worked a normal bank job for a while but kept making music. I hit a point where I had to choose a graduate school, continue working, or quit and do music full-time. At that point, I decided to try for a career in music but as an audio engineer. That choice was the choice that changed my life forever!

Moving to Orlando, FL, and attending Full Sail University is where I was really able to learn the technical side of music and media. After graduating, I moved to Atlanta and worked in a few studios; first interning, then as an assistant engineer. After a few years, an opportunity arose to move to Los Angeles and I couldn’t pass it up!

It was in LA that I landed my first music placements with Universal and also placed music with music catalogs. These pieces are played on ESPN, sporting events, access Hollywood as well as other network and cable programs. While all of the minor and more significant successes kept me going, I still felt that I wanted to go further.

This led me to pick up a camera and begin to shoot pieces of content for the artists that I was producing for. Creating more and more with people sparked the idea for my company 82Infinity Media!

82Infinity Media is a company that is focused on small businesses and independent artists. We create content, provide music, videography & photography services, and ultimately serve as a go-to resource to captivate their target audience.

My ultimate goal for 82Infinity Media is to be the resource for others that I wish I always had access to.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road has had every obstacle in it that you can think of. The struggles that came were always challenges that I needed to go to the next phase when looking back in hindsight. Whether it was a lack of funds, access to beats, disappointments of music not making it on certain projects, signing bad agreements, or just sheer fake help/love; I have been through it all!

I don’t think that I am an outlier in this regard, but rather quite the norm if you talk to enough creators still doing it.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about 82Infinity Media?
What sets us apart from other companies in this space is that we are a company of creatives that focus on helping other creatives. While the goal of any business is to be profitable, 82Infinity Media is not solely driven by monetary gain. There is not a budget too small for us because we believe that everyone starts small so we want to help be a resource to these independent businesses and artists.

I am so proud of the artists that we have worked with this past year because not only did we deliver to them many of their first videos, or logos, or creative direction; we also helped to educate them on things like music publishing and releasing their music while retaining ownership. It is these types of efforts that other companies simply do not offer. Clients of 82Infinity Media are not transactional touches but rather another relationship seed planted.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I loved video games, riding my bike, music, art, and computers. I was an outgoing introvert (if that’s a real thing). I played sports and loved being with my friends, but I also enjoyed listening to music or watching music videos alone, or going online and seeing what was out there on the internet.

I am a libra born on 10/10 so if you are into that type of thing, that should give you an idea of me. I enjoy balance but love a great time. This was how I was able to party so hard in college but still get things done!

When I was young, I always knew I wanted to do something with music though. I would watch local video shows every Friday and Saturday night and collect CDs. As I got older, I would hit as many concerts that I could and see my favorite artists perform at clubs in Philly whenever I could. Hip-Hop was life for me! Also, because Philly is such a musical city, old classics soul was big for me too. People always are surprised at how many old-school songs I know the words to.
