Hi Danielle, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
You know when something is yours: It’s in your favorite color, it’s soft to touch, or you absolutely love the fit. It speaks to you and makes you say: YES, PLEASE!! ONYX xoxo was born from that excitement! As a child, I would make headbands and headscarves as a fun and fast way to spice up my day. I felt my mood lift and I felt special knowing I had something made just for me.
Now I love extending that feeling through ONYX xoxo jewelry pieces, such as my signature ear cuff, to help the wearer feel fully expressed and fabulous! It’s one-of-a-kind, just like each of us. At a young age, I was a brave little lady who walked up to each neighbor’s door and asked directly if they’d like to see what I made and buy one for themselves or their friends. I’ve always loved making things by hand that make people smile. As I grew up and started wearing my jewelry casually, as well as on-camera and during musical performances. My friends began to ask me to make them jewelry as well. Saying “yes!” led me to create an entire collection of jewelry which I started selling at a local artisan marketplace in the Arts District in Los Angeles. My customers kept coming back and ONYX xoxo grew very organically. I love that we still cater to person by person to keep them smiling.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
We are only available online at this time. We would love to have a big public relations and sales team on board. However, as a small business, we have had to scale back on certain expenses to maintain the quality of our products during the pandemic. Before the pandemic, it was wonderful having pop-up shops and a storefront available for our customers. We are still working on opportunities to scale up so that we can expand our reach and be available in person again. ONYX xoxo is known for their signature ear cuffs! They give a bold look while still feeling comfortable and light on the ear. We love being able to custom make them with gemstones, 14kt gold and upcycled leather in most colors for all. We also offer personalized styling for photoshoots, videos and online content observing today’s safety measures. We book local shoots by appointment and work with you virtually beforehand to design a look that suits your style! This service has been available only via word of mouth until now. A free consultations to understand each unique project is key!
We often work with entertainers, local musicians and people looking to style their personal brand with a unique touch. Accessories allow you to add your own flair. You can think of us as your personal stylists from the boardroom to the performance stage. We work with your chosen photographer, or you can hire our in-house photographer to provide a social distancing shoot. We want to keep you and your team safe and comfortable during the experience when working in person. During virtual consultations, we help you prepare for your shoot in advance and will ship your items of choice to your set or location. Special custom orders for accessories like hand and body chains are available upon request this season.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
We’ve been lucky to design custom pieces for so many wonderful ladies and gentlemen. The first traveling pop up we ever did was at a cool vintage music theater for a Gatsby-like show. Our first customer was singer Andra Day, who is such an amazing talent. She bought a pair of rosebud earrings from our secret collection called “Roses Are Red.” We continue to be lucky when building relationships with those who carry an amazing energy and confidence about themselves. Our customers love our pieces because they get to push their boundaries and express their personal style. We love when people look at an edgy mini ear cuff or our new ONYX xoxo “Angels on Earth” collection and say, “Oh, but I could never get away with wearing that!” That’s a sign of a healthy challenge to work with our customers to get them to their “who am I to feel THIS fabulous” look! When our ladies and gents try something new that makes them feel empowered, we have arrived together! We all get to fuel each other and lift each other up…it’s magical!
