Hidden Gems: Meet Robert Miller of Phenom Performance

Today we’d like to introduce you to Robert Miller.

Hi Robert, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I played Division 2 football at Ferris State University in Big Rapids Michigan and after my senior season I had ambitions to continue my football career. I made the decision to leave school with a semester left and go play overseas in a small American Football league for a team in Vejle, Denmark. After spending two seasons abroad, I figured it would be best to finish my degree and start figuring my life out. I enrolled at CSUN and finished my obtaining my business degree with a focus in marketing in 2011. At that time, I decided to complete an internship at “The Factory” a training facility in Westlake Village, CA and it was there I found my passion for training youth athletes. In order to not be just another “trainer” I studied to become a Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) in addition to working as a physical therapist assistant to understand the mechanisms of injury and design programs to keep my athletes healthy. In 2014 after three years of growing as a strength coach, I went off on my own to start my business Phenom Performance LLC. While still growing my business, I felt there was more I could learn to become an even better CSCS so I reduced my training hours in order to volunteer at Pepperdine University for a year and learn from their excellent Strength and Conditioning staff. I was able to learn so much from that experience about the strength and conditioning industry and best practice methods used by top strength coaches. That information has allowed me to grow my business into what it is today, working with some of the top youth and collegiate athletes in the area.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road to this point has been anything but smooth. The road here included everything from bad business deals to losing clients and continuously gaining new clients. The first lesson learned was be careful who you decide to do business with. Plenty of times people would want to partner up and things would end up falling apart due to lack of quality work and business integrity. Luckily I never entered into contraction agreements with these individuals so it was easy to walk away from bad situations before they got worst.

The second lesson I learned was to never take anything personal when it comes to clients. Clients come go all the time in this industry for reasons that are out of your control so the only thing you can do is put your best foot forward each and every time you work with someone. Because you’re never 100% sure what your client retention will look like, it’s very important to save because I’ve learned that just because you have an amazing month doesn’t mean your next month will be better or even the same.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Phenom Performance is personal training that specializes in training youth athletes and weekend warriors. What sets us apart is the personalized experience we give our clients. The gym is only 1500 square feet and at most there is six clients at a time allowing for a lot of attention to be paid to every client. We pride ourselves on developing movement skills that help our athletes stay healthy and compete at the highest level. We offer two different options for training.
