Hidden Gems: Meet Qieer Wang of Qie Media

Today we’d like to introduce you to Qieer Wang.

Hi Qieer, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
B.1991. I was born and raised in Chengdu – The capital city of Sichuan, in southwest China. I worked in a mobile game company for a year as a strategist and associate art director in 2013 but figured that I was longing for something else. It wasn’t an easy decision to make, but I felt committed. In 2014, I received an offer and soon, I immigrated to the US for grad school, where I picked up the path to animations. I have self-taught animation basics from YouTube tutorials, and merged with my illustration background. After I graduated, I moved to New York and started off as a freelancer.

Over the years, I’m lucky enough to work with clients like A24, Adult Swim, Adobe, Google, Giphy, Hulu, Spotify, Lilith Games, Warner Media, NYT, NPR and more. In 2021, I have joined Netflix Animation and worked on visual development for an animated feature. It was a blast to work with old blue sky studio crews as well as prestigious producer and director Jinko Gotoh and Mark Osborne.

Another one of my recent favorite projects is getting to work on ‘ Everything Everywhere All at Once ‘. I illustrated 2 spreads for their new published book along with the movie screenings on multiverse – ‘ A Vast, Pointless Gyration of Radioactive Rocks and Gas in Which You Happen to Occur ‘, for an interesting theory on Quilted Universe.

Excitedly, the International Women’s Day’s animated campaign series I worked on with Warner bros. Design team in early 2021 has won a golden award at Promax this year. I directed 5 animated videos about 5 different issues that women are still dealing with today.

After about five years of working in editorial and animation fields, I have made up my mind to launch my own creative studio – QIE MEDIA, a dream-come-true space to land my vision and passion in narration.

I love simply being curious and believing in the commitments I put myself into. QIE is one of the most exciting things I’ve ever dreamt about. I named it after my middle Chinese character, QIE – it translates to ” giving your all and everything.” It is this spirit that sparks back in 2013, and I’m carrying it on.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It’s a yes and no.

Once I made my mind to go for a new direction, the sense of commitment has avoided a lot of mental obstacles. Whenever things worked out as planned, it felt so blessed and satisfying, but at the same time, I noticed how much I’ve done to make it happen. It’s a double-rewarding moment.

I am facing the biggest challenge of my career at the moment. As for a lot of unpredictable paths are intertwined. That’s where the excitement turning into anxiety. It’s a brand new experience for me that I can’t really wrap my mind about it yet.

But I’m sure it’ll be worth it.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
